Plineeus Merkator, Professor of Cosmology

Professor Plineeus Merkator

Plineeus Merkator, at an advanced age, is seen as quite the rebel and maverick. And completely to his own enjoyment. He has been a cartographer, explorer, professor, theorist, philosopher, alchemist, planar scientist, and cosmologist. He still travels to institutions to give talks on advanced theories and extraplanar studies, presenting a blend of traditional, new, and radical theories. Thoroughly displeasing someone at every talk. He is known for his engaging speeches and more than a few quirks. Those familiar with him say he constantly speaks to himself, sometimes seeming to have conversations with some invisible being whose responses cannot be heard. The absentmindedness of his type is so typical it is expected. His mind is sharp and can recall tremendous amounts of research and readings. Yet, he sometimes appears quite confused during his public talks.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Three fingers on his left hand are twisted outward at the bones, from suffering in a Bone Plague. It also left problem in his spine which makes sitting painful.

Mental characteristics

Employment

By the time he made a name for himself, he taught less in long contracts and began traveling.  He gives talks at schools and universities. Sometimes he stays for a session to teach, especially to wait out the winters.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Plineeus was a field cartographer, but his slow drawing skills, which never seem to improve, made his maps mediocre. They were valued academically as they were detailed, but his logs had information more valuable than his maps. He is an expert observer.  He sees what others don't, spot possible relationships and patterns in everything. Some of which work out to be true.

Mental Trauma

Plineeus suffered from several deaths in his life that affected him deeply. His twin sister died young when fire elementals were set loose in their city. A quarter of the city of Bowsun burned before the next morning when rains helped suppress the fires. His sister and an aunt and uncle were trapped when a building collapsed. He always felt she wasn't far after that. His father passed in an accident when a startled horse kicked him.  His mother always said he stayed around to watch over them and wait for her before moving on. After being away for years of travel, he was matchmade with a wonderful woman who died during a Bone Plague outbreak. Plineeus contracted it as well and his bones suffered damage, making sitting constantly painful on his spine as well as a curl outward of three fingers of his left hand.

Intellectual Characteristics

People should not believe so easily or too fiercely in anything.
Always adventurous in learning, he does exhibit joy in ruining other people's convictions. He is always ready to have a bit of tea and discuss the minutiae and the esoterica of a subject. An early fascination with death and the possibilities of the afterlife on planes beyond Urth would eventually fuel his interest in examining and exploring the other planes.  This conveniently left behind his mediocre cartography skills. He has trouble not openly display venom for institutions that forbid or discourage investigation and learning. He sees it as a slow genocide of the populous, and just as evil as quicker methods.

Personality Characteristics

Likes & Dislikes

Absolutely obsessive about teas and other herbal drinks. He would work to be paid in teas from exotic locations.
