Once upon a time, Herbert was the youngest child of Count Jericho von Krolock. He was spoiled in his childhood and given everything he wanted until one fateful night.
Five centuries ago, Herbert's older brother, Albrecht, was murdered by the progenitor vampire, Queen Carmilla. His senseless murder was committed on Albrecht's twenty-first birthday at an extravagant ball held by his father. His death was a result of Jericho refusing to become her immortal servant at the cost of his sons. He and his wife were subsequently forced to turn. Herbert was turned after his mother found him barely clinging to life. His mother was later killed in the First Wild Hunt.
For two centuries afterward, Herbert had been the emotional crutch of his father who had been dealing with the deaths of both his wife and Albrecht. Herbert barely remembered Albrecht at this point; it was for the better. However, all changed when two mortals had strolled into the castle. The Krolocks killed and ate the senior professor, but Herbert took a liking to his young apprentice, Alfred. Their relationship slowly blossomed into love, and eventually, Alfred and Herbert were wed by the ceremony of the Mitternacht Ball.
[Taken from Wyrd's page] Six years before the Wild Hunt, Herbert and his husband were hunting near a village. As they were about to return to the castle, they came upon a child crying in the snow, covered in burns and near death. Their blood was still warm from their recent meals, and in an attempt to warm the child Herbert fed the child his blood and saved their life. They began to notice odd changes shortly after they returned to the castle with the child. Their nails grew faster, their hair changed color from the roots, and their burns healed faster than normal. Finally, they found the child draining blood from a rat with two newly grown fangs. They checked the child for bites and found none, yet the child still displayed vampiric traits. It was the count that determined the cause: Herbert’s blood willingly given with the intent to save their life had turned them made them into a dhampir and joined them to the von Krolock bloodline. He explained they would be cursed to walk between worlds neither human nor vampire but was cut off by Herbert scooping them up and proclaiming them as his child and heir before running off to find Alfred. After much discussion, the child was named Wyrd, an old German word for fate.

Wyrd (child): Herbert loves Wyrd more than anything in the world. However, Herbert was most definitely not the most effective teacher on his own. While his husband and father taught Wyrd all manner of magic and combat, Herbert spoiled Wyrd rotten with gifts and affection. The one thing Herbert taught his child was how to draw eyeliner sharp enough to cut somebody, though.
Azaloth: Herbert acted as arbiter to Azaloth's duel with his mother in Session 11. In his eyes, any friend of Wyrd is a friend of his and the Krolocks.
