Patriarchy

A system of society or government in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it. The family line is tracked through the male family members. The primary family line is considered to be the one that begins with Brice Draco then follows to his first born son Noam. Then from Noam to his first born son Arnaud. Then from Arnaud to his first born son Matteo. Franz is considered a secondary family line because he is born of a son with in the primary line, but is not the first born son. Generally, he would not have been considered because he is a bastard. When considering who should be chosen as the heir for the company and rulership of Seattle, they look first within the primary family line. If there is no acceptable candidate within that line, they will look within a secondary family line. The tertiary family lines are those that follow either a second born son or a daughter born from a male within the primary line. This is the last place they will look for a heir. Generally, they would not have considered a bastard for an heir, but Franz made himself impossible to ignore.

Dragon Blood

The family claims that there is red dragon blood in their veins. This claim is only made within circles that are aware of the Shadow Kind and is not a public claim. They believe that this dragon blood grants them with special abilities and strengths which makes them more fit to be the rulers of Seattle. They also believe that those who inherit the dragon blood traits share specific physical characteristics with the red hair and green eyes being the most important. They also believe that being tall and of a larger build is part of the dragon traits. Thus, when choosing a heir they will look for evidence that there is dragon blood traits in the person. Thus far, every ruler of Seattle has been someone with these traits.
