Solution: Fire
If one of the party places their hand on a pedestal, they triggering the casting of an elemental immunity spell that lasts 10 minutes. Once a pedestal has been used, they all crumble into sand. This is their reward for getting the riddle correct.

Trap
When leaving this room, there is a trap located in a small niche near the door to room 29. It is triggered by a pressure plate that runs the span of the hallway in front of the crystal that emanates the magic. The floor is discolored here where the fire has claimed its last victim.

4d10 fire damage, Dex saving throw DC 15 for half.
The trap can be discovered with an investigation DC 15 and can be disarmed with an arcana DC 15.
