United States of Bakeria
The United States of Bakeria is a semi-presidential unitary republic, with territory centred around the capital of New Yotium City. It is the most powerful state in Edrothia, exerting influence over other polities through trade and a strong military. The USB is renowned for its magical and technological advancement, as well as its high standard of living.
Structure
The United States of Bakeria is a unitary republic, meaning that it is a democratic nation with power concentrated in its capital of New Yotium City. The citizenry elect representatives, whose role it is to support their electorates' interests in the Senate. The leader of the senate, and head of government, is the Prime Minister, while the President serves as the executive and head of state. The Supreme court's members are appointed by the President, who is elected by the citizenry, and acts as the nation's judiciary.
Culture
The people of Bakeria generally praise individualism and self-sufficiency, while being staunchly opposed to authoritarian rule. The nation has a very strong middle class, which has resulted in a very high average standard of living. Materialism and consumerism are commonplace in the cities, with many luxury items available even to the relatively poor due to advanced production techniques and complex trade networks. However, in the countryside and on the frontier, where religious observance rates are much higher, many are opposed to this growing trend.
History
New Yotium was established in 826 YD, and was the first permanent Colossian colony on mainland Bakeria. Its establishment was funded by numerous prominent merchants in Lotium, as well as by Magus Jack Baker of the Esoteric League. New Yotium was established as an independent city-state, as was common practice during the colonisation of the Ciprosian centuries prior, but retaining strong ties and friendly relations to its sponsor-city of Lotium. While originally named "New Lotium", the name was quickly changed to "New Yotium" due to the native Loxodons' difficulty pronouncing the letter "L" at the time.
Over the following decades, numerous other independent colonies were established throughout mainland Bakeria. Before long, however, the colonies united into the United States of Bakeria, which was named after both the island and in honour of Jack Baker's assistance in establishing and maintaining the colonies. The union was officially formed primarily to better manage commerce and defence against the numerous monsters that populate the New World, but many suspect the Esoteric League was largely responsible. The new nation was dominated by New Yotium City, due to its large population and strategic position, and thus its government became fairly centralised, with power being concentrated in the capital.
Demography and Population
Bakeria is a diverse nation, with its population made up primarily of immigrants and the descendants of immigrants. Roughly 75% of its population is Human, with another 15% being Loxodons. The remaining 10% is a mixture of virtually every sapient race found on Ura, including Elves, Goblinoids, Gnomes, and Dwarves. Among the human population, 80% is from Colossia, 15% are New World Vedalken, and 5% are from Dukhala).
The religious makeup of the country is equally diverse, due in part to the secular nature of Bakeria's government. Roughly 55% of the population identify as followers of the Colossean pantheon, 35% as Teghneist, 2% Mekonite, and 1% Opiterean. 4% did not specify a religion in the latest census, while the remaining 3% are a mixture of Shroud Cults and native beliefs.
Trade & Transport
Bakeria's official currency, the doler, is backed by the silver standard, and its production is tightly regulated by the central bank in New Yotium City. The doler has become the de facto trading currency throughout the New World, and has even become commonplace in Dukhala and Colossia. The importance of Bakeria in international trade is due primarily to New Yotium City's important role as a trade hub between Edrothia and Dukhala, as well as Norlans' position as a centre of trade within Edrothia. Laws favourable to merchants, and Bakeria's large middle class, also contribute significantly.
