The Disruption

The Disruption is the name given to various mythological events found in cultures across Ura. These events all have common themes, most notably the destruction of a once mighty civilisation by extraplanar invaders, usually due to the hubris of that civilisation. The event is associated with the fall of the Finorrian Union in Teghneist teaching, and with Divine Civil War in Colossean and Mekonite teaching.

Summary

In Teghneist teaching, the Disruption was an event that took place following the Abyssal Invasion, in the early years of the Blood War. The Finorrian Union was greatly weakened by these conflicts, as were planar barriers. As a result, numerous extraplanar beings and factions assaulted the Union in a series of wars lasting for centuries. The Union eventually repurposed a series of magical devices to repel them and seal the planar barriers, but due to their excessive faith in their own creations, and lack of faith in Teghne, the devices worked improperly. Once they were activated, they did seal the planar barriers and defeat the invaders, but their use caused all the wonders of the Union to be destroyed in an instant, plunging the world into an age of darkness.   In Colossean teaching, the Disruption occured when the evil gods sought to sieze power from Teokt, the king of the gods. They summoned abberrations from the far realm to assist them, but were ultimately defeated by the ingenuity of Siviessa and the trickery of Petos, under the command of Teokt. The civil war, however, left the kingdom of the gods devastated, and so the remaining Five used the bodies of the fallen evil gods to create Ura. The Mekonite myth differs slightly, with Bizitzum (Ettu) being the king of the gods, and with the war ending in a stalemate, mediated by Gatazka (Teokt), though it is otherwise the same.   The Goblinoid version of the Disruption features the original Kingdom of the Sun being destroyed in a cataclysmic war between the Goblins and Bugbears, who each summoned demons and elementals to aid them. The war was brought to an end when both sides were conquered by the Hobgoblins who, with the blessing of the Sun, brought order back to the world.   Lizardfolk traditions generally speak of a war between the Dragons and some unknown enemy, who was defeated and sealed away by the dragons at great cost, causing them to splinter into chromatic and metallic (and sometimes gemstone, though this is dismissed by most scholars as a translation error) tribes.

Historical Basis

It is believed by many scholars that the common myth is the result of the cyclic changing of Ura's climate every 800 years resulting in the collapse of numerous civilisations throughout history. This theory, known as the Devastation Theory, purports to explain why the myth was seemingly independently developed in each of Ura's three continents prior to their inhabitants making contact with each other. The Devastation Theory is criticised by some scholars, however, as even civilisations near the equator, which are largely unaffected by the planet's cyclic cooling, developed Disruption myths.   Other experts hold to the Diffusion Theory, which suggests that the myth was created by one culture (or perhaps was an amalgamation of beliefs from several cultures), then spread throughout the world. The Diffusion Theory is split into two different sub-theories. The first, known as the Arcane Diffusion Theory, proposes the idea that the Disruption myth was spread by magic users who travelled across the three continents via teleportation spells before official contact was established between them. The second, known as the Prehistoric Diffusion Theory, states that the myths were spread millennia ago, at a time when movement between the three continents may have been more common. Both Diffusion Theories are often criticised due to lack of evidence of movement between the continents prior to the modern age.
