Caledor

For King, Country and Church.

The mighty Kingdom of Caledor, home to the Gryphon’s Order and their sovereign leader King Sheldon IV. The history of this land is as rich and grandeur as the mighty fortress cities that stand fortuitously in its open plains. Beyond those mighty walls lie great cities and grand castles that no siege can hope to contest. The flames of zeal glow brightly in the hearts of its citizens, as they are led by the Pope who leads the Church of Ezreal.   From knights in shining armor to wise old wizards, Caledor is the epitome of the most cliché but grandeur high fantasy settings. Here the humans of the northern lands have built their power through political dealings, commerce and pure man power. Where the humans lack in natural affinity for magical attunement and raw power, they compensate with their will to succeed in the world of Unicorta. Humans, while lacking in many areas, succeed the best in their ability to unify under one powerful banner. The kingdom of Caledor is no exception to this example.

Structure

The Kingdom of Caledor is represented primarily by the King himself, a central power who ultimately decides the fate of the country and its people. However two other powers have, for all intents and purposes, equal say when it comes to decision making within the kingdom. These people are: the grand leader of the Gryphon's Order, the Lord Commander, and the Pope of the Church of Ezreal. Together, these three individuals collaborate (and at times debate) what is best for the country and what courses of action should be taken. This is by the grace of the King, however, as his respect for his brethren is what allows such behavior. In the end, the King of Caledor was ordained by the God-King himself. At least, that is what most people believe today.

Public Agenda

The goal of the three powers that be ultimately have different agendas, but that is to serve separate functions. The King, whom commands all forces within the country, is concerned with the economic and political going-ons within his borders. Often the citizens of the kingdom are promised peace and prosperity by there king, and for the most part he has done so. As for the Lord Commander, his concerns go beyond the country's borders. Keeping checks on enemies and allies, providing logistical support and ensuring the kingdom has enough manpower to go around - these are the Commander's primary objectives. The Pope, however, believes only in faith and order. To some extent, the Paladins and Clerics that serve the Church may often times replace the policing forces of the Gryphon's Order. So rather than just serving a religious service, the men and women of the Church provide social services as well.

Demography and Population

Caledor consists primarily of humans, however it is a free society that is generally welcoming of all races. All Fortress Cities have a relatively diverse population of races living within them, but most people whom live outside those walls are human. The only race that is met with some sort of discrimination are the Tieflings, but this is due mostly to the Church of Ezreal. Folowers tend to have a negative disposition towards them but other than that, most citizens will treat them fairly.

Military

The primary military force that protects Caledor is known as the Gryphon's Order. Headed by the Lord Commander, the military consists of three separate but specialized branches: the Imperial Guard, the Imperial Cavalry and the Imperial Navy. Each one serves a specific and important function that serves to protect the greater good of the country. Normally the Lord Commander would have complete control over the military, but in times of war he acts as an advisor to the King.

Technological Level

Although not as advanced as Dwarven technology, Caledorans do take pride in the ease of life they are allowed to enjoy. By using both science and magic, inventors have created many systems, transports and devices that allow city life to be a breeze. Electric trams, magically powered air transports, automaton assistants and much more are only a tip of the iceberg. Caledor is certainly a step above others when it comes to technology.

Agriculture & Industry

Unlike other prominent countries, Caledor has a lesser focus in agriculture. Due to the cultivation of a more "protected" society within the walls of a Fortress City, citizens of Caledor have no real grasp of the farm life. As a result, their focus mainly lies within that of academics and invention. Having some of the best schools in the world, Caledorans are famed for their inventors. Often times, countries will export specific products from Caledor due to the nature of the inventions - the being ease of life. Since many of the citizens are not burdened by hard labor on a field, they are able to focus more on creating devices that help with the average person's life. Pneumo-tubes - a mail system that takes advantage of wind magic - are a great example of this.

Trade & Transport

Trade in and out of country is mostly done by horse drawn carriages. However, intercity trade is conducted via the use of Giant Tortoises and Bracosaurs. To be exact, the cities that lay atop these gargantuan creatures. Since travelers of Caledor tend to either live on these creatures or travel by them, merchants often employ storage houses Tortoise and Bracosaur Towns to transport goods from one city to another. These creatures, however, are not permitted to leave the border as a safeguard for both the people and the animals themselves.

Education

Boasting the greatest Colleges the world knows, Caledor is well known for its academic prowess. Caledorans generally value education and ingenuity and their institutions reflect this shared value. The College of Hamerfell, located in the fortress city Hammerfell, is renowned for its mages and engineers. Often, many people will travel from other countries to obtain a respectable education, as most other places do not have such institutions. A good result of this is a well-educated populace that is capable of supporting its government (when they feel it necessary, of course) and supplying the world with good laborers.

A country perfect for farming. With almost no farms.

Major Exports
The most important good that the Kingdom of Caledor provides is three things: education, labor and inventive products. To remind those reading, Caledor is not an agricultural state nor is it a magic one. To provide a valuable resource to the world the kingdom focuses heavily on its education services. Often times people from all over the world will travel far and wide to attend a college within one of Caledor's many Fortress Cities. This provides educated and capable people, meaning good labor. Educated people also means innovative products. Although these goods are not traded outright, the denizens of other countries recognize this.
Major Imports
An unfortunate downside to the nature of Caledorans is their heavy reliance on consumable goods. With an almost criminal lack of agriculture taking place, Caledorans must import food items from their neighbors in order to sustain their population. As a result, a deep relationship has been developed with Synesthal and Sagesh.
