Ancient heritage
Inter-species relationships have always been a thing in Undina, with half, quarter, and even 'mongrel' breeds being common. As a result, most people were referred to by the race of the parent they most resembled but this caused a few inconsistencies, such as Orcs with horns or a 5' halfling. The most unusual was a scaled elf. the exception is anyone who can shape shift is labeled a changing.
By the end of the Rebel age this was common enough for the parent resemblance rule to be tweaked to the most resembled recent ancestors, normally up to great-grandparents. Lacertillia, in particular, being a 'mongrel' state with over ninety percent of its population being recently descended from at least three races.
By the end of the Divine age, very few beings were 'pure-blooded' anything. A few noble Orc, Draconic and Phervian families held out, though Rivell, in particular, had turned into the prime example of this phenomenon with king Louis being a Human with elf ears, Tiefling horns, and the grey complexion of a goliath. He was called Human because they didn't know what to classify him as.
By the end of the blood age, only Phervian populations could claim 'purity' but even then, other races had made inroads to it. By the end of the second century Chroma, no one could claim to have a single species within three generations of their family tree.
