These are the basic and most common languages and don't include the gutter talks or thief cants of different cities, as these are usually based upon the dominant language. These include all the languages of the world, not just those surrounding Chrailis. This list isn’t exhaustive either; the actual number of languages is in the thousands.   This list is largely compiled from previous games. Languages which would be, or might be, useful for this campaign would be as follows: Common (Chrailis), Chrysta, Fasch, Fropper, Jibak, Kahndu, Koklo, Tree-Chant, Sissth (Red, Blue, and Green dialects), Tela-Tan   Rare languages occasionally used around Chrailis would be Borlik, Chik’ta, Dolankar, Draconian (see notes), Rictat (all versions,) Kran, Sissth (Black dialect), Spradea, Toreagadu, and Vegat.   If you really want to learn any of the other languages (except High Singing and Shorlithra), you may, however you will likely be the only speaker of this language in the land.

Languages of the Land

Languages with strikethrough are not currently available. Linguistic Skill Modification: See notes under Character Creation for acquiring new languages.
  • Alar (Alar) For Alar, this language is instinctive. Very songlike, and almost unpronounceable by any non-Alar, it is the same regardless of where the fury (group name) lives.
  • Boreznian (Human) The official and common language of Borez.
  • Borlik (Borlik) The harsh, barking language of the Borliks. Though few humans can understand it, hardly any can speak with any success. The wild minotaurs of the mountains, if they can speak, will usually speak a variety of this language.
  • Chennari (Genie – Air Elemental) Genie talk, occurs mainly in Amaravati.
  • Chik'Ta (Thri-Kreen, Mantis People) The thri-kreen language. Consisting of whoops, clicks, and buzz's, it is very difficult to understand and even harder to speak.(double skill cost for non-insectoids)

  • Crysta (Human) Elite language of the aristocrats and great houses in Chrailis. Few outside their circles bother as they are dismissive an any not born to their ranks. It has a lot of Common mixed in as it is not that deep of language, only about 6 thousand words total and doesn’t have much practical use unless you are describing social events like galas, dress code, and proper manners.
  • Draconian (Dragon) The language of dragons. Regardless of species, they all speak this. They also have their own species based language which is commonly known by their type followed by sub-draco. For instance, the green dragon language would be green sub-draco. The world dragons don’t speak a language as they are all telepathic. While many study this language in Chrailis, none of the dragons actually speak it when they can speak Common. Many in academia use this language for its usefulness in understanding magic.
  • Drak Jabi (Dwarf) The guttural language of the Dark Dwarves.
  • Fashch (Orc) The language adapted by the orcs around Chrailis. It is a combination of traditional orcish and the common languages of the land. While it involves a lot of gutturals, it is easier and more natural for many orcs to speak than common.

  • Haryabaran (Human) Language of the Haryabari riders. (edited)
  • High Royala (Human) The language of kings. The ruling class of Brynthia and Borez speak this language, using is mostly to separate themselves for the commoner.
  • High Singing (Elf) The common, almost musical, language of elves. Descended from the Low Singing.  Anyone who could make due understanding High Singing automatically understands Low Singing.  All Arisilon elves have perfect pitch and eidetic memories as this is required to understand their language. Just about every type of sound, click, and whoop is used in their language. It has been estimated their vocabulary could approach 1 million words before taking into account tonal differences.  An elf’s name can take over a minute to say, but any elf hearing it knows their history as a result.
  • Jibak (Dwarf) The language of the Dwarves.
  • Kahndu (Human) A secondary language around Chrailis. No one knows its origin. It is primarily spoken by the lower income populations on the fringes of society.

  • Kran (Giant) In the mountain homes of the scattered giants, this is the bellowing language, though somewhat primitive which they use. It has a major dialect for each branch of giant (Fire, Frost, Stone, Storm, Cloud, and Mountain). All other types adapt to the language of their superior neighbors.
  • Low Singing (Elf) The language of the Wild Elves. Many clans of Wood and Jungle Elves also speak it.  The elves around Chrailis call it Tree Chant. The language is similar in build to the Inuit languages of earth where root words morph into exceedingly long words as descriptors are added.
  • Lydro (Wereraven) The language of wereravens. This is the only known language of lycanthropes.
  • Moralik (Moralik) Soft, almost purring, trade language of the moraliks around Kraylin. Only they use it with any regularity.
