Cover

Cover is vitally important to your continued survival, especially in a setting where ranged weapons are more prevalent.

Types of Cover

Partial Cover

Things such as castle battlements, sandbags or overturned tables. This adds an AC bonus against ranged attacks to whatever is hiding behind it. The amount of AC is based on the cover in question but is usually somewhere around a +5. Any ranged attack that fails to hit a target hiding behind partial cover will instead hit the cover itself.   In some cases, Partial cover may also provide a bonus to defence against melee weapons as well. This applies to things such as fences and windows. In these instances, it mat be the case that only attack from melee weapons with reach, such as spears and other polearms may attempt to attack a target behind them.   As a rule, anything you can fire through is only partial cover.

Full Cover

This completely prevents ranged attacks from directly connecting with anything hind behind it while it is intact.
All cover may be targeted and the right weapons destroyed or reduce to partial cover. Some weapons and abilities are even able to bypass or fire through cover, often at a slight penalty to the attack.   Any creature that has to lean out from behind cover to attack will only benefit from partial cover during the action. So remember to save up those reactions and consider using overwatch when fighting through heavy cover.

Size Matters

What constitutes cover for on creature may certainly not to another. A sprite may use a flower pot to hide but an orge should not seek to do the same.   In most cases, creatures may hide behind creatures of the same size or one larger as partial cover. And in many cases anything larger than that as full cover. But remember creatures come in all shapes and sizes.
