20 Questions To Help You Create Multi-Layered "People"
I know many folks have created races of "people", and many want to know what questions they should be asking to make their races more multilayered.
Here then are some questions to consider when creating a race or ethnic group of beings/people.
- How large a group are they? Do they come from a large population or a small group? Are they the last of their people?
- Who are they? What do they call themselves, and each other?
- How do they treat children? Their Elders?
- Do they have magical abilities, or would they be considered "mundane"?
- Are they superstitious? Do they have a developed religion, or perhaps multiples, or do they value scientific observation?
- Not all "people" are human. What do yours look like?
- Does your race have a government or some other form of leadership?
- What does their everyday clothing look like? Do they have a more formal fashion style?
- What about gender? Does this race have genders, are they rigid or fluid?
- Does your race have a social ladder? Do they have social classes?
- What does a family unit look like?
- Do both parents raise the children?
- Does this race believe in one god, or multiple? Do they also believe in a goddess or many Goddesses?
- Do they have an economy? Is it driven by wealth, trade, or some other countable currency like shells?
- What traditions do they celebrate?
- How do they deal with death?
- Is this a "lost race" or are there members in your current timeline?
- What do your people consider good manners? What do they consider rude? Do they have taboos?
- Is this a technological race?
- Is this race or ethnicity known for something specific?
Great resource. I will definitely work through this as I go through my cultural revisions and updates!
