Welcome to Ubuild

Welcome

Hello traveler and welcome to UBuild! UBuild is a cooperative forum based worldbuilding experience through our discord, with a focus on the upbringing of individual adventurers into heroes, and an ever expanding colony building mini game. The central goal of UBuild is complete and total player freedom to change an entire world with reprecussions determined and enforced by your peers.
You will find that the world is not fully explored or available. This is intentional, as part of your quest is adventuring, and finding new lands, and new experiences, or even discovering overlooked secrets in already explored lands.
You will find that not everything in the world is named upon entry. Those who explore will be able to name the areas they discover. Though political machinations, cities, other players, or even historicaly relevant actions on the server could even cause the name to change over time.
Finally, and most importantly, the world itself is not static. Each IRL week, there will be new events, new technologies to unlock, new buildings raised and new quests for adventurers to pick from at their settlement. The world itself starts in an age of stone tools, and basic technological capabilities, and the players themselves can drive the world into the space age, and potentially beyond.

Character Creation

Within UBuild, there are only two mechanical limitations for creating a character. First, you cannot create a character based on technology or magic that does not exist. This includes Gunslingers and inventors before the age of engineering. Second, each player is only allowed to have 1 active cleric at a time.
Though not limited by itself, Wizards are in controled quantities until a kingdom is in the age of metals, where reading, writing and sharing of information become capable within a society. Champions cannot be created without a cleric representing the belief system that they will be upholding. Alchemists will need to use natural ingredients, or ingredients found in the wild until the proper technology is created. Other cases of class restriction may apply, but only if characters are trying to use technology that is not available in the current time period. Once the appropriate time period has been reached, there will no longer be restrictions for classes, even creating a caveman when the rest of civilization is in spaceflight.
It is reccomended to follow the steps found in The Archives of Nethys to build

How to create a character 101

In the event you are new to creating a character in the pathfinder, rpg, or d20 style, this guide is to assist you in an easy to follow step by step guide as to how to create a character. Note this guide assumes you start at level 1.
Step 0, Concept: Before ever putting pen to paper, you should think about the character you wish to create. Your immagination has no limits, and the GM or admins are more than happy to work with you to build a character concept that works great for your fun, and fit a theme that you wish to go for. For your first character, it is reccomended to seek inspiration from more than one piece of media. Find a character style that you find inspiring, and mix it with a character ideology and mentality that you think would be interesting or fun to play. If you have a specific race in mind, this may require approval from the GM, but who is happy to build additional races to populate the world. Note, that if your idea race is very similar to another, but is just trying to be different mechanically, this can be altered using the racial feats for your race, and will need to be discussed with a GM.
Step 1, Ancestry: Choose your ancestry based on your character concept. Apply all ability boosts and ability flaws to your character sheet. Additionally, you may take 2 more flaws in order to gain an additional ability boost to a stat of your choice at this time. Finally, take an ancestry feat based on your races ancestry and apply all other effects for your race as listed on the races page.
Step 2, Background: At 1st level, each character can choose 1 background, and apply all effects from your background to your character sheet, including ability boosts and feats.
Step 3, Class: Your class will grant proficiencies, as well as 1 Ability boost to your character. The class will also detail what you gain as you level up.
Step 4, Equipment: Part of the main lore of UBuild is that your character can come from any place, in any time period and be thrust into the world. Because of this, your character will appear within the world with no equipment. Helpful NPCs will give you the equipment you require in order to properly build up your character for their equipment, as a result, leftover GP is converted into funds appropriate for the location you spawn in for the server (you choose where you spawn.) Leftovers may also be converted into trade goods, or gemstones instead. By default in the stone age, your leftover GP will become an assortment of gemstones or trade goods worth that much remaining in GP, or, what players determine to be the source of financial documentation within the kingdom you choose for your character to spawn in.
Step 5, Modifiers and Details: The PF2E character sheet will have numerous sections to review when you finish building your character. It is reccomended that you read through your sheet and apply modifiers after you review it. If you require assistance, ask for help from a friend, the admins, or even the GM if they are available. The more details you fill out on your sheet the better, but if you are unsure of something, or if there are errors on your sheet after you submit it, the GM who reviews your character can assist you with the issue. Each abilty score in PF2E starts at 10 and is modified by your ancestry, background, and class, along with 4 boosts to your chosen ability scores. Ability scores are not rolled so that all characters have the same opportunity, and can have their character abilities tracked easier.
out your character, with the following notes about the rules for the server.

Classes And Ancestry

Characters are created at 1st level, for any qualifying class, and can take any appropriate ancestry.
Currently, Champions, Gunslingers and Inventors are not qualified to be classes.
Clerics, Majus and Wizards are highly restricted classes. Each player can only have 1 active cleric, Wizards and Majus will require strict review, but assume they are not qualified.
Bards and Alchemists have some technological limitations based on the materials available. Alchemists can only use natural ingredients until a full lab, and a source of glass become available. Bards cannot use metal instruments.

Backgrounds.

Part of the game is that your character can be picked up from any setting and placed within the world to help create society from scratch. Because of this, all backgrounds are available, but not everything will be useful to you throughout your playthrough until the appropriate age is reached. Keep this in mind when chosing backgrounds, as admins will let you know problems about the backgrounds that you will face given the current time setting.

Ability Scores

All characters tart off with all ability scores at 10 before modifiers. For fairness and balance, ability scores are not rolled in UBuild.

Starting Equipment

Based on the age of the world, your starting equipment will be limited. It is assumed that even if you come from a space faring society, that you come to the world with absolutely nothing, but are given a gift of your starting equipment and clothing by a friendly craftsman. Your starting equipment value is still 15gp for buying equipment. Anything left over will be removed and your wealth level will be determined. To determine your wealth level, add your character level and choose a way that your character generates wealth using expertise. The combined score will become your base wealth level. Starting equipment can start higher based on your Retirement bonuses.

Final Details

Alignment: Note that alignment is not a dictation of your characters actions, but a note of the players actions with the character. Alignment can change at the consensus of the GM and a player. However, frequent changes of alignment at the request of a player to avoid consequences will entail worse consequences, and a player refusing to change their alignment based on their actions can result in the change being enforced. The enforcement can be rare, but yet again, alignment is a note of player actions with their character. This also goes for actions that directly interfere with a characters faith, even if they are the one who created the faith.
Deities: Players are allowed to have only one cleric as a character they have access too. Each cleric can create their own deity, however, not playing a cleric can cause the Deity to fade into the void from lack of worship, should the worship be forgotten. Clerics and deitys are player driven, including evil ones, and ones for monsters. Characters can worship whoever they desire, but only clerics can officially form a religion within UBuild. Note, this can bring consequences in character.
Age: In UBuild, every real life week is equivalent to a month in game. This does not mean that your characters age if you do not want them too. Players can allow their characters to grow old and die whenever they decide to do so, but otherwise, all player characters have technical immortality. You should only play a character whos age is of legal adulthood for their ancestry, to allow them access to the freedom of society. Anything of less than legal adulthood must be approved by the GM. Any instance of using an underage character for explicit activities either in private, or on the server will result in an immediate ban for all players involved. This is a zero tolerance policy.
In the case of long lived creatures such as elves, or where something is not explicity said that they are adults, the age of consent is 18, regardless of what people try to say is their societal standard. See the zero tolerance policy in the previous paragraph.
Gender/Pronouns: Remember that everyone can and is equally capable of becoming an adventurer. When it comes to adventurers, nobody is great at everything, but their limitations are not due to gender norms or stereotypes. If a society wishes to have conflict about this in the setting, that is fine, but remember to keep bigotry of this type to in character. If someone is uncomfortable about this possibility, remember that conflict doesn't just build stories, it helps expand a world. Talk to the GM if something makes you uncomfortable with the world, he is an avid supporter of LGBTQ+ rights. If no solution can be reached there, perhaps it would be a good idea to create your own society, with tolerance, and love.
Character Goal: When you create your character, think of a reasonable goal for them to accomplish by a reasonable time frame. Consult a GM if you are having problems coming up with a character goal, or are unsure if your goal can be completed within a reasonable time frame.
Once you have completed your character, consult with a GM who will review your character sheet, and ask that you make changes as necessary. Note that due to limitations, it is unlikely to place an NPC in the world based on your backstory, it is reccomended to place current or previous PCs in UBuild in your backstory with their consent. The character sheet that you create will be tied in with a character page directly on UBuild, and stored underneeth the settlement or region in which your character presides, or, wherever else makes sence to look up your character page. Character sheets are common knowledge, character journals are private unless otherwise shared. See Metagaming rule for more info.

Homebrew PF2E Rules

Certain elements of PF2E are changed in order to better fit a text based RPG, as well as general enjoyment.

Hero Points

Hero points are account based, not hero based. A player can spend hero points as necessary for all characters at any time. Players only earn hero points during adventures. A player will earn 1 hero point at the beginning and end of an adventure. If the players are participating in an adventure they will gain 1 hero point every hour over voice, or for every scene in text based adventure.
Hero points cannot be used for kingdom actions, but may be used for running settlements.

Crafting

Crafting works as normal for the game, except items are affected by the Discoveries that an owning kingdom has, and can be further modified by the settlements expertise modifiers. When crafting inside a settlement owned by a kingdom of a higher tech level than the item you are crafting, reduce the number of days it would take to create the item by 1/2. If this would reduce the number of days it would take to create the item to less than 1, then the item can be made during a long or short rest depending on the item.
Bulk Crafting: When creating an item in a settlement that can be crafted using the settlements modifiers, there is the possibility to bulk produce the specific item. The cost of making the item must be no more than 10(settlement level*appropriate crafting modifier). These items are always nonmagical. Items that can be made in bulk must make sense to be made in bulk for the current technology level of the kingdom. Once items are created and a general crafting check is made for them, then these can be counted as a resource the kingdom can use, or, be sold on an individual level. Creating items in bulk takes the same amount of time as regular crafting. Kingdoms cannot start their own bulk crafting, however owning a settlement can.

Spells

All common spells are available for players to choose during character creation. Uncommon spells, and those of higher rarity, must be found throughout the world, and can be brought back to a kingdom to add it into the spells available to its citizens. Spells that are retrieved in this way can be stored on a settlement or kingdom level. If stored on a settlement level, any kingdom trying to steal access to the spell gets disadvantage on their roll, but only the settlement itself can store the spell. Gaining access to a scroll of this type of spell does not guarantee gaining the spell itself, only gaining the knowledge through adventuring. Spells stored in any part of a kingdom in this way provide a +1 bonus/spell level to a specific kingdom stat.

Leveling Up

Level Up Milestones

LevelMilestone
2-5Individual Tasks
6-10Settlement Tasks
11-15Kingdom Tasks
16-20World Tasks
There is no player experience in UBuild, as keeping track of so many players will be more tedious than fun for players, admins, and the GM. Instead, leveling up is a milestone based system based on the adventures that you take under a GMs supervision. Any quest that you decide to go on will grant you the appropriate level upon completing the quest. If you accomplish a quest from a higher level, you will gain an additional level upon completing the quest.
Additionally, once a month, there is a chance for your character to level up using a vote casting system.

Wealth Levels

There are a near infinite number of ways that a kingdom can determine wealth among their populace. Between bartering, gold, or even using chickens as currency, determining someones wealth in every kingdom can become challenging. Instead, players will use a modified D20 modern wealth level system.
Each wealth level determines how much in equivalent GP a character may spend within an in game month in order to maintain their financial status.
The wealth level is considered an abstration, showing the total buying power of a character at any time. Should a character have to obtain funding, make some deals, or otherwise find ways to buy something above and beyond their means, the wealth level will reduce. If the character gains significant funding, is given a valuable gift, levels up, or even steals from the town treasury, then they can increase their wealth level instead.
Your wealth level will reduce if you do the following:
  • Any purchase of wealth level 15 or higher (1 point)
  • Any purchase 1-5 points higher than wealth (1 point)
  • Any purchase 6-10 points higher than wealth ( 1d6 points)
  • Any purchase 11-15 points higher than wealth ( 2d6 points)
Additionally, characters can gift wealth levels to each other. A character with a higher wealth level than another may gift, one at a time, a wealth level to another character. Each reduction of wealth must be accepted by both parties. When gifted, the gifting characters wealth level will be reduced by one. So long as the recieving characters wealth is less than the new wealth level of the gifting character, the receiving characters wealth level will increase by one. If the scores are equal, or the receiving characters wealth level is higher, than the wealth level is instead lost for good.
You may not make a wealth check if your wealth level has the potential to being brought below 0 from your purchase.
Bribery: In some social situations, a guardsman may require a bribe, a politician needs his pockets filled to listen, or a cleric needs convincing that the store may be closing soon and she should get herself something nice. If you choose to persue this course of action, a wealth check must be made. Roll a 1d20 . You must pay the guardsman at that wealth level. If it is under, or at your current wealth level, then you can proceed without issue. If it is above your wealth level, you may choose to pay them at that wealth level. Your GM may choose to apply a penalty based on the wealth level. This can be at a -1 per difference, disadvantage on your roll to persuade them, or they can determine that the price is set and will proceed no further. The person who makes the original wealth check does not have to be the one who pays it, this simply sets the DC. A GM may instead choose an appropriate wealth level based on the wealth of the individual, or the mission that they are running.
*Characters cannot gain this level of wealth, but may spend up to this amount.

Upkeeping

When it comes to wealth levels, it can sometimes be difficult to determine how much wealth you have left to spend. By default, the wealth level is how much you spend in a month. When you take on a reoccuring monthly payment, such as a higher cost of living than subsistence, that cost must be noted on your character sheet, and is subtracted from your available funds.

Beyond Your First Character

Each player is allowed three active characters. Only one active character at a time can be a cleric. Finally, all characters are limited to a maximum level of 20. But what happens if your character slots are full?
A player may retire any of their characters at any time. In addition, if a character dies, they also may retire the character at that time preventing them from being ressurected. When a character retires, they gain a list of benefits as detailed below. A retiring character gains 1 benefit for every 5 levels of the retiring character. They gain an additional benefit if they have accomplished their character goal.
When you retire a character, perform the following steps:
  1. Convert wealth levels into Funding.
  2. Gain benefits for character levels and character goal.
  3. Choose character retirement
    • Create a Kingdom
    • Create a Guild or Faith run by a current or new PC.
    • Join a current kingdoms leadership.
    • Leave the realm forever
  4. Create a new character for the character slot. (optional)

Retirement Benefits

Ability Boost: Grant an ablity boost to any active character, for only the highest ability score of the retiring character. This cannot raise a characters stats above 20.
Bonus Feat: +1 general or skill feat at character creation for this character slot.
BP Bonus: Gain a number of additional funding to use for any character slot equal to 2x your character level.
Divinity: Add your character as a divine of an existing faith with the leaderships approval. The character cannot become an NPC within UBuild, and is removed from the game. If the character dies choosing this benefit, choose an additional benefit.
Fast Start: This character slot always starts at 1 level higher than normal. Characters must still level up a minimum of 4 times in order to gain any retirement benefits.
Income: Gain 1 wealth level/5 retiring character level for this character slot.
Sainthood: Settlements that follow the faith of your clelric become proficient in a lore check of your choice. If the same lore check is chosen multiple times, the proficiency improves only to master, not legendary.

Server Rules and Regulations

Now that you have created a character for UBuild, there are some important things to discuss regarding the server that must be understood as far as player interaction.
  1. What the GM says is Final. If you do not like what the GMs final ruling is, talk to an admin or the GM outside of the current issue to discuss.
  2. The ruleset for characters is under the Pathfinder 2e Ruleset in case of conflicting arguements. In any case, the GMs ruling is final. Additionally, there is no need to be a rules lawyer, rule bending for a GM or admin is about administering fun, and allowing player agency. Not breaking the game.
  3. Any instance of using an underage character for explicit activities weither in private, or on the server will result in an immediate ban for all players involved. This is a zero tolerance policy.
  4. In a roleplay session, if you leave unannounced, the roleplay will be assumed to be completed after 20 minutes of inactivity, or, your character will be considered to have left. With an announced leave, this is increased to two hours, or, can be migrated to a private RP between the players involved.
  5. Metagaming: Unlike many roleplay servers, this server is founded on the belief that you should be rewarded for being an informed and skilled player. Your assumptions may be found incorrect about monsters and how they work. Metagaming is not about the monsters, instead it is about interactions between players. If you know that someone has passed a deception check against you, you must treat it as if your chacter does not know. That is the point of deception, and must be treated as such.
  6. Powergaming: Powergaming is the act of using your description of events to detail how an action happens for another character. Any source of powergaming is innappropriate, even from a GM. The exception to powergaming is when using enchantment, at which point it is up to the player afflicted, or the GM to act in regards to the spell, not the spellcaster.
  7. PVP:There is always an option for PVP in the game. However, PVP alone does not grant you experience. Unless consent is given by both players that they are willing to risk their characters life to fight the other player, under the watchful eye of a GM or Admin, the combat cannot result in a death of either player. If a player who previously agrees to a PVP with the potential for loss of life, and leaves without fair warning, they will be given 20 minutes to return to the combat, or will be killed. If they give warning, they have 24 hours to finish the combat with the other player, and must message the GM when they make their move. Should extenuating circumstances dictate that the player cannot participate, the PVP will be considered a draw, and ended, with acceptance from both players and the GM. A kingdom is always assumed to be in agreement for PVP, but must have a GM present for any and all instances of PVP. If a kingdom does not react to the declaration of PVP by a kingdom, it will be assumed that no additional action is taken under that kingdoms defence.
  8. The server is considered to be an 18+ server, however, those under 18 can, with express permission from a parent and/or guardian, be given access to the server, and will be given a special role detaling their age.
  9. Cursing, swears, bigotry and racism are acceptable only in character. Bigotry, racism, and hate speach towards other server members out of character will give an immediate 24 hour ban so that they can cool off. Bullying someone will have a week ban, and require a public appology to come back onto the server. These bans can be extended as neccessary.
  10. Regarding kingdoms, each player is allowed to own 1 kingdom, and 2 guilds and/or religions at any one time. If a guild or religion becomes a kingdom, they must give up control of their original kingdom, or give the guild/religion to another player.
    • When running a kingdom, all sheets are due before 8pm PST every sunday. If this deadline is missed, your kingdom will perform all actions as noted on the previous kingdom phase submission. Events are delt with either immediately, or before the next kingdom phase. This shall continue until a kingdom gains 3 rebellions.
    • You can create your own kingdom sheet by copying the block link here, or submit them over discord.Kingdom Phase submission example. If copying the block, give the GM the blocklink (EX: 940594) to allow them to quickly access your block. Make sure that the blocklink is public.
  11. There may be additional options for creating items and lore for the world, talk to your GM about possibilities for the potential for creating lore.

GM and Admin Code of Conduct

  1. The GM cannot, and shall never single out a player for retribution. They may still refuse to participate with an unfavorable player.
  2. A player may only be kicked out completely from the UBuild server if they have empiracle proof of the underage exploitation zero tolerancy policy, or, with unanimous agreement from the GM and Admins.
  3. If a GM or admin is found giving favoritism for a single player, all other players will recive the same benefits that the favorited player has recived. If the Admin or GM exploits this on purpose, they will be banned.
  4. It is the honor of a GM or admin to help players succeed in a task despite the odds. We work together to face challenges, not throw them on you for laughs.
  5. It is the duty of a GM or admin to inform them of positive benefits outside of their character sheet. It is the players duty to inform a GM of positive benefits on their character sheet.
  6. GM Ian Eiriksson is not allowed to make puzzles, but is allowed to have someone actually good at puzzles to make them for him to use.

Bans

There are three levels of bans based on the conduct involved. Bans are separated into three categories, and can be challenged by the player to the GM one time. Bans may be reduced if given a public appology, and acceptance by the community.
24 Hour Ban: The player and all their characters are banned for 24 hours. Used primarily for hate speach, and unruly players who need to walk away from the game for a while.
Week Ban: The player and all their characters are banned for a duration of 1 week. They will still gain benefits for their settlements and kingdoms, however, they will be assumed vacant for these rolls.
Permaban: The player is no longer allowed to play in UBuild, settlements and kingdoms will be permanently vacant, and delt with in character.

World Guidelines

These rules are harder to pin on either the GM or the players, so these are just basic ground guidelines for server enjoyment.
  1. The server is neither comedic or serious. However, lets not get too crazy with naming a town 'Towny mc town face' but to at least make it clever, for example 'Townsville Dale' is perfectly acceptable.
  2. The map is randomly generated, however, there will be opportunities for the players to change the map to their whims. Admins and GMs must all unanimously that a change is neccessary for a hex space in order for it to be changed. This includes quests with the potential to change a hex space, even if it does not happen.
  3. The player owns the rights to their character, and any artwork they create of their character. Playing on the server is an acceptance that their character will appear in other peoples artwork, and stories of their character. Nobody owns the map to the world, and are free to create their own copies. Lets be civilized about copyright protections and give credit for all artwork where it is due, as per world anvil TOS.
  4. Map changes can happen due to mistakes. Consider these 'cartography errors' from the original drawings.
  5. If something about the server makes you uncomfortable, or not feel safe, reach out to a GM or admin, we try to foster a safe environment. At the same time, remember that your character is trying to change the world, so think about if it is something you have the potential to change in character. Even if it takes generations to do so. The GM and admins are here to make you feel safe however, and if you don't feel safe, we need to figure out the issue ASAP.
  6. No ban is set in stone, and no rules outside of no tolerance policy is without exception. Talk to the GM or Admins about the rules if you have questions or concerns. If many people have questions or concerns about the rules, they may potentially be changed.

Author's Notes

A little background on favoritism from the owner of the UBuild worldanvil wiki. A big point of inspiration for this server, the rules, and how the community operates is based on a forum based RPG I participated in many years ago. I was invited by a friend, also the owner of the server, to participate in a kingdom building RPG, and asked if I would be willing to play as the dwarves of that world. I looked into it and was super thrilled to try it out. I created dwarves that were different from most other people, and even made entire legal systems that gained me applause and admiration from my fellow roleplayers.
One of the big things about the game was that it was freshly started with all the kingdoms in makeshift aliances with one another, and a freeform syle of roleplaying that was based on what you wrote, not what abilities that you had. Even with that, stats and magic were important in the game. Part of the game included that one empire, who was strangely very very strong, decided that they would go to war with my characters ally, who also happened to be his neighbor.
My neighbor was a friend, and he believed that all hope was lost. Based on the layout of his city, his lower count of troops, and high reliability on magic, he asked me if I thought I could win a battle against 1-10 odds against the people marching down on his front door. Knowing this layout, I accepted, and was given permission by my friend (the server owner) to run the combat for them. The cost of the battle was well known. If I failed, my neighbors character would die, and all of us accepted this risk.
What I was not aware of at the time, was the favoratism for the attacker against the kingdom by the server owner. She did indeed outnumber the kingdom I was defending ten to one. I was aware of this beforehand, but my tactics were sound. What I didn't anticipate was the "random effects" of the battle that were suspiciously against my favor... at every turn. The king can cast a major spell to take down a siege tower that is about to be at the building? Well the people they were about to kill are struck by lightning. An assault from behind the city on the waterways for a port town? Well we should send out our own ships which outnumber them three to one against them, and perform a flanking position! Aparently not as a sudden typhoon comes up and destroys the entirity of my fleet while my opponents people were untouched. No, they didn't use magic, it just 'happened.'
Above all, the one that really irked me enough to quit the server, was when I said, "Ok, my soldiers see that the typhoon is coming, and they need to defend the wall set up against the port, and prevent people from invading."
"Oh, you don't have any walls inside the city or against the port."
"But you told me I have full walls..."
"Yeah but they end at the waterline."
So you have a giant city, against a port, with no defense on 1/4 of the entire city, and nothing preventing people from reaching the palace, because the owner of the server was trying to get into the pants of a power gamer? This might seem petty for some people at a glance, but that was a final straw for me for the server and I immediately quit after stating, "There is no possible way of winning without 1/4 of the defenses I was promised. Game is over." Myself, and a handful of people immediately left the server after recognizing the obvious favoratism with the owner, and I promised never to let such a thing happen if I opened a server of my own.
All of this just a longwinded way of me saying that there will be NO favoratism in the server, and if there is favoratism, bring it to my attention immediately. There will be a public appology, may be a demotion of an admin, and the issue will be fixed immediately.
Please feel free to comment on any page throughout UBuild, and note that even the world name could be changed based on player feedback. I truly care for the community I build, and hope that you will grow to care for it as well.
