Mermaid Culture

Observation Log of KLO Mimi Lakes: Mermaid Culture

Praymonth the 32nd, Year 54 of the Century of the Nymphs, 26th Cycle
After the whale adventure, Elder Jazzach took us hunting for fish. She took us to take down a number of Sweet Fish - AB's favourite snack. They pair really well with his cookies so I was really happy to eat them later.
Elder Jazzach seems to be less grouchy at me after I was able to take them down as well. After watching her with her spear and seeing the whales use the currents as puppets, I added some of my flower seeds into a current and shaped it with my hand, in water form.
After the third fish I was able to create a small dagger from my seeds and the Ocean current without needing my hand there.
Even before the Northern Warrior Mermaids existed as their own tribe, Mermaids were able to conjure weapons out of the Ocean. Or, make them from materials in the Ocean and meld them with the waves. The stronger Mermaids could make weapons from the Ocean currents, or utilise their own smaller currents as part of their weaponry. For example, the Elder Northern Warrior Mermaid weapons today are much more fascinating than most of the other weapons I've seen in Bahriin.
Although Mermaids don't have the same rage and challenge mindset of the Beast-kin, they have always been the ones who procure meat for the rest of Turien. Particularly before North City came to be, Mermaids were the ones to feed Turien with meat dishes. Now they are not the only ones, but they are still the majority of fishers.
They also still find the best meat.
As AB cooked the food, Elder Jazzach took me the Mermaid Library of the North. It's pretty small for a library, but KLO-MeiMei was enjoying it. She and the other KLO librarian had a lovely time chatting.
So, looking through the records, there is a lot on whales. Makes sense due to their necessity as food. There are a lot of species, though.
At some point, Diplomat Indra Mayder also came in and loaned some of the records from Mermaid Cove and Mermaid Palace that referenced larger-than-normal whales or Guardians. She actually found a record on Guardians. Well, a specific Guardian, but it was a Magi-clam. And it was a Guardian of Magi-clams.
Reading through the story, it looks like the Interpreter of the Magi-clam Guardian was also a Magi-clam. But they were really good friends with a Mermaid boy who was exceptional at singing. So, they worked out how to speak through song and rhythm.
I don't really get it. My sister jokes that I was given to my dad cause my mum abandoned me after hearing me sing. I do not have the 'singing gene' that is needed to be a Mermaid, apparently.
But the record itself is really, really old, and doesn't talk much on Guardians, more on the relationship of the boy and his Magi-clam friend. Apparently, this record is also a copy, but a very popular children's book was published based off of this story.
Mayder said that although singing has always been a Mermaid trait, singing to Magi-clams wasn't the norm in the first few cycles of Turien.

KLO-MeiMei: Yeah, you definitely have the Nymph trait of telling and twisting stories rather than the Mermaid trait of song. It's so core to our cultures that I often forget you are half Mermaid.
