Rock Penguin Species in Tûran | World Anvil

Rock Penguin

Basic Information

Anatomy

What makes this species of penguin different from the regular penguins in the arctic regions of Tûran is its color. Instead of the usual black and white pattern, this penguin has patches of grey to make it nearly invisible against the rocks it lives on. The females are larger than the males and have more black in their plumage which makes them more camouflaged in the water. The males have more grey which makes them more camouflaged against the rocks.

Genetics and Reproduction

Rock Penguins stay in monogamous pairs throughout most of their lives. Same-gender types have also been known to couple up. They usually end up raising the abandoned or orphaned babies.
These Penguins usually lay one or two eggs per mating season. A mating season happens once per year during the warmest period of the year.

Ecology and Habitats

This species seems to thrive on the dangerous rocks of Shipwreck Isle. Where other animals and humanoids would slam to dead against the rocks, the penguins seem to be extremely proficient in navigating the currents and avoiding the sharp, pointy rocks.
Unlike their arctic counterparts, these penguin colonies range in size to only about 100 pairs. The different colonies are situated all over the coast. When they meet up, they don't fight, they just ignore each other. Living in colonies makes them highly social within their own colony, Researchers have also figured out that some have formed their own type of communication, comparable to dialects in humanoids.

Dietary Needs and Habits

As far as researchers can tell, the Rock Pengiuns eat fish and shellfish that live around the rocks of Shipwreck Isle.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Females seem to be the main providers for food while the males stay to take care of the eggs and babies. The females also seem to decide where a pack moves to and are slightly larger than the males.

Domestication

These penguins are wild animals and much more ferocious than their arctic counterparts, so they are very hard to domesticate. When kept in captivity, they will turn on each other.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

No one has ever seen a Rock Penguin away from Shipwreck Isle, so it is presumed they only live there.
