The Cats of Ulthar are not common felines. They possess great intelligence, speech, and an esoteric aristocracy all their own. They do not, however, have a societal structure, and instead live among and as pets to the humans who populate the village of Ulthar. The people there are zealously protective of their cats, who bring them good luck and prosperity in return. Any traveler who harms a cat within the bounds of the hamlet can expect quick and terrible vengeance at the hands of the villagers and felines both.
Suspicious of outsiders, the Cats of Ulthar will sometimes hear the plea of a wandering Dreamer and lend their mystical aid, especially if it will frustrate the darker powers in the Dreamlands. They are much more eager to assist any creature that so much as looks like a cat, a state of being they refer to as "the Holy Form."
