Fey Courts
The political powers of the League of Iamel-Zed. Where the Oligarchy's power lies in its many Noble Houses and the strict order they impose, the leagues comes from the many, many fey courts that are scattered through out its land. Theses courts are, in a way, the opposite side of the coin to the noble houses. They are still ruled by grudges and petty whims, but are far more expressive and open about it. A thousand year grudge that was started by a disagreement of something simple like whether a hotdog is a sandwich or if porridge is a soup, can result in thousands of death, bodily injury or cases of polymorphing into a worm, only to be resolved in the course of an afternoon so they can team up against a third court over the number of holes in a straw.
The Courts often have extreme power, both politically and magically. The more Fey are part of one, the more powerful it is in both regards. Some of the oldest and largest courts have magical power so great, that even a careless word or gleefully misinterpreted contract can bring immense devastation. Any words by a party with a higher member of a fey court can have power beyond the expected. For example, innocently answers the question "May I have your name?" could strip it from you entirely. A leader or a powerful court could even extend this power to those who are not present, as a leader of Noble house could accidently trade away their entire house's ability to lie for example
This erratic nature extends to their social structures, with each and every Court having their own ways of ruling their peoples. Some have the rulers chosen by the gods, others have them chosen by bloodline and a few even draw straws. Few things are consistent in this land, but some of the older courts provide at least some structure to the League.
Most courts tend to be rather clan like, with many sharing a race, a creed or even a bloodline, though more multi-cultural Courts do exist. These Courts often claim dominion of certain aspects of life rather than land, being spread across the League. For example, one clan might try to monopolize herbs, while another might try to claim poetry. Both could exist through out the entire League, with only a central base of operations being confined to one spot
New courts can be created by the sponsor ship of no less than three other courts and the blessing of the League's over all ruler, The Archfey known as Nim. Given Nim's wandering attention and chaotic nature, as well as the inherent natures of the Courts, this makes creating a new court a nearly impossible task.
Legal rights- The rights of each individual under the rule of the Courts are similarly varied among them, but are usually far more open to mobility than the strict caste system of Noble, Commoner and Serf that the Oligarchy employs. That is not to say that blood does not play a large part in many courts, merely that there is an opportunity for most to rise. A small on in some courts, but still usually an opportunity.
If a individual wants to leave a court, they must first secure a new court to join, for to live outside of the courts is an extreme taboo. Those that are not a part of one find themselves discriminated against and mistrusted. Due to the Fey's social nature, It is said the worst punishment a fey can endure, even beyond death or torture, is to be exiled. To have no court or family to belong to, is to be considered the lowest of the low
