Curses & Hexes
To a non-magical person they might seem like the same problem, but where Hexes are conditions caused by other wizards, magi, witches, faes, demons or other magical beings, Curses have no such cause, they are more of a magical "glitch". Hexes are inflicted upon you for a reason (usually revenge Curses you are born with. Hexes can be undone; Curses stay with you your entire life. Some can be even genetically inherited.
Hexes tend to be either bound be 1) deed, 2) blood or 3) death. The first ones can be undone by completing a condition the caster weaved into the targets fate. The second type can be undone through healing magic, but it needs to be done quickly for the curse to not have caused some permanent damage to the target. The last one can be cast upon someone even by a non magic user, if their death is so traumatic and their hatred for their targeted person so great. It is hard to dispel it but it is possible although it usually takes a very skilled magi and a lot of time and magical resources. Sometimes, death hexes are used as a punishment for criminals if their victim manages to get their revenge with their last breath. If the republic finds the hex strong enough to be a fitting punishment for causing someone's death, such criminal is branded so no magi will ever help him.
Because there is no apparent cause to Curses, dealing and living with them seems to be a lot harder for their "victims". Some spend their entire life convinced that someone had to hex them and they will try any remedy, any spell and weird potion or medicine to try to undo the damage. It usually ruins their health and drives them into poverty. Some people are completely ostracised by their communities and forced to live in seclusion or might become a victim to hate crimes and pogroms.
In bigger cities, there are special orphanages for cursed children as they tend to be abandoned by their parents. The living conditions and education provided in there is not really the best. Not even plain "good" sometimes.
