Freedom's Progress Settlement in Traveller: Second Contact | World Anvil

Freedom's Progress

Freedom's Progress is a unique town located on the Ggantija Superoid within the Mikhail Subsector Galactica. As the largest settlement on the superoid, it serves as a refuge for a diverse population of around 2,500 individuals who have a shared past as mercenaries, pirates, and criminals. These residents have made a deliberate choice to distance themselves from their previous criminal lifestyles and pursue a new existence, away from the reach of law enforcement agencies like the Galactic Corporate Empire (GCE).   Despite its origins, Freedom's Progress aims to establish a semblance of law and order within its boundaries without the heavy-handed intervention of external authorities. The town's leadership, which likely comprises former criminal masterminds or charismatic individuals, works to maintain a delicate balance between personal freedom and maintaining a functioning community. They may have implemented a localized system of governance or self-policing, depending on the principles they collectively adhere to.   The architecture and layout of Freedom's Progress may reflect the eclectic origins of its inhabitants. The town might consist of a mix of repurposed spacecraft modules, modular structures, and salvaged materials, giving it a distinct and somewhat makeshift appearance. However, there may be efforts to gradually improve and expand the infrastructure as the settlement grows, transforming it into a more permanent and stable community.   Freedom's Progress serves as a potential center for trade and commerce within the Ggantija Superoid. The town's inhabitants, utilizing their former criminal connections and expertise, may engage in legal enterprises such as salvaging operations, ship repairs, or small-scale manufacturing. They may also foster connections with the nearby asteroid belt, capitalizing on the rich resources found there to sustain their livelihoods and promote local economic development.   While many former mercenaries, pirates, and criminals call Freedom's Progress home, the town also attracts other individuals seeking refuge from authorities or desiring a fresh start. These newcomers might include individuals escaping indentured servitude, those seeking to leave behind oppressive regimes, or simply individuals seeking to live on the fringes of civilization.   Freedom's Progress represents a distinctive and self-governing community where individuals with a shared past of lawlessness come together to forge a new path in life. The town's development and future depend on the collective efforts and choices made by its inhabitants, as they navigate their desire for freedom, stability, and a chance at redemption away from the watchful gaze of GCE enforcement.

Industry & Trade

**Diary of Mazzic Lorrie** **Market Day**   Today was Market Day in Freedom's Progress, and as the sun rose over the rugged Ggantija Superoid, I could feel the anticipation building in my bones. Market Day is always a bustling affair, a chance to connect with fellow settlers and showcase the Hardy Cattle that I've worked so hard to raise in this unforgiving terrain.   As the morning mist cleared, I set out with my cattle, guiding them through the winding paths that lead to the town. The low gravity makes the journey a bit easier on both the cattle and me, but I still had to keep a keen eye on them to ensure they didn't wander off. The thin, tainted atmosphere requires me to wear a filtered respirator, a constant reminder of the unique challenges of living on this planet.   Arriving at Freedom's Progress, I was greeted by the vibrant sights and sounds of the makeshift town. The eclectic architecture, a mix of repurposed spacecraft modules and salvaged materials, never fails to amaze me. It reflects the diverse origins of its inhabitants, including myself, who have sought redemption and a fresh start away from the watchful eyes of the Galactic Corporate Empire.   As I led my Hardy Cattle to the market square, I noticed familiar faces and exchanged warm nods with fellow settlers. The camaraderie amongst us is unique, bonded by our shared past as mercenaries, pirates, and criminals. Here, we have found a way to leave behind our dark history, striving to build a new existence, one that embraces freedom while maintaining a sense of community and self-governance.   Setting up my stall, I proudly showcased the Hardy Cattle. Genetically engineered for harsh environments, these magnificent creatures are hardy enough to withstand the challenges of this low-gravity planet. I take pride in raising them, nurturing them, and seeing them flourish under the open skies of Freedom's Progress.   As the day went on, I engaged in lively discussions with potential buyers and fellow farmers. Trading stories of our past exploits, we marveled at how far we've come, embracing a life of honesty and hard work, tending to the land and the livestock that now define our purpose.   Market Day also presented an opportunity to replenish our supplies. I made sure to purchase the essential items needed for the next month, from provisions to tools, all while supporting the local merchants who have found a fresh start here as well.   As the sun dipped below the horizon, I returned to my homestead, my heart full of gratitude for the life I've built here. Freedom's Progress is more than just a town; it's a place of redemption and second chances, where individuals like me have found a way to forge a new path, surrounded by the untamed beauty of this low-gravity world.   I retire to my dwelling with a sense of contentment, knowing that tomorrow will bring a new day of hard work and purpose, tending to my cattle and nurturing the land that has become my sanctuary. Freedom's Progress may be on the edges of civilization, but it's here, amongst the resilient settlers and the Hardy Cattle, that I've discovered a true sense of belonging.   End of Entry.

Points of interest

Murder Hobo Inn: One of the most surprising locations in Freedom's Progress is Murder Hobo Inn. Murder Hobo Inn was founded by Jimmy Snakeyez. He says he has been running the Inn for over 20 years. He had been working as a chef's assitant on Capitol Prime, when he got caught stealing. He decided to run from the law, and while running he accidentally killed a hobo who had been stowing away on the same Free Trader. When he settled on Freedom's Progress, he named his place the Murder Hobo Inn, so he would never forget how bad he felt about period in his life. Somewhat surprisingly, he turned out be a miracle chef when it came to the food available at Freedom's Progress. Pirates and mercenaries througout the Subsector are familiar with the food at the Murder Hobo Inn.

Thank you for writing this. I liked the idea of making a town out of spaceship modules. As more and more people come, the town builds into an electric hodge podge of technology. Also, the diary entry gave some insight into the life of former pirates, who now lead a productive life.
