Minor Gods

The secondary figures in all Totanian faiths, perhaps even tertiary behind Angels, Minor Gods take all sorts of different forms throughout Totania, each being varied depending on the pantheon. Some are worshipped in equal measure to the Major Gods, and others are disregarded by most of even the most faithful followers.

The Many Gods of Totania

Totania has a set amount of Gods, each instrumental in the creation of the universe and each present since its creation (save for the potential Gods who killed a previous God and took their place).

Those Gods are Major Gods, who hold a place in the very fabric of existence, where the Heavenly Realms come in. Those are the regions of Major Gods, and Minor Gods are at times granted pieces of these regions, but Minor Gods are not essential to the existence of the cosmos as Major Gods are, nor do they have nearly as much power.   Instead, Minor Gods are forces of worship within the faiths of the world, figures to help channel aspects of belief that the Major Gods often do not have time nor patience to focus on. This helps more followers feel included within a faith, finding something more to believe in beyond the individual teachings of the Gods themselves.   Minor Gods are not as all-powerful as Major Gods, and the strongest mortal warriors have been said to be able to fight Minor Gods in single-combat, as happened many times before the Age of Heroes.   Below, some of the most notable examples of minor Gods throughout the various faiths of Totania will be listed.

Fortuna

Fortuna has many Minor Gods and Goddesses that help give luck to people in various fields, but the most famous Minor God in her pantheon is the only truly notable of the bunch.
  • Ilabrat- Minor God of Messages, helps the Gods communicate with each other, and sends messages from Gods to Mortals and Mortals to Gods. Considered the most powerful of all the Minor Gods, and often thought of as an honorary Major God. He appears in a tornado, his face the only thing visible, to deliver messages

Hadur

The Temple of Hadur details the most extensive list of Minor Gods, beginning with a Dwarven woman named Frī, who he made one of the very first Minor Gods in all of Heaven. With her, he had many children, and each of them filled out the remainder of the pantheon.   Some notable members of the family pantheon include:
  • Frī- Minor Goddess of Motherhood and Birth
  • Ostara by Jarhed

  • Tuisto- Minor God of Childhood and Duty, first child of Hadur and Frī
  •
  • Ôstara- Minor Goddess of Glory and Waterfalls, child of Hadur and Frī, mother of the Hero Hurdren
  •
  • Saxnôt- Minor God of Weaponry, child of Hadur and Frī
  •
  • Hludana- Minor Goddess of Fame and Gathering, child of Hadur and Frī
  •
  • Nerthus- Minor Goddess of Transportation, child of Hadur and Frī

Ninatta

The Minor Gods of Ninatta are also called Muses, and are representative of the many types of song and poetry that Ninatta rules over. They are called on individually for their influence over art, as well as what that art may, at times, bring out in them and others.   The Muses include:
  • Calliope- Chief Muse and Minor Goddess of Epics, Eloquence, and Harmony
  •
  • Melpomne- Muse and Minor Goddess of Tragedy, Memory, and Murder
  •
  • Clio- Muse and Minor Goddess of History, Proclamation, and Certainty
  •
  • Polyhymnia- Muse and Minor Goddess of Hymn, Pantomime, and Faith
  •
  • Terpsichore- Muse and Minor Goddess of Choral Odes, Dance, and Celebration
  •
  • Euterpe- Muse and Minor Goddess of Music and Delight
  •
  • Erato- Muse and Minor Goddess of the Arts and Literature, attributed primarly with erotic poetry
  • Myrine by Jarhed

  • Thalia- Muse and Minor Goddess of Comedy and Frenzy

Ishtar

Ishtar had many demigod children, and when they died, she helped many of them ascend to heaven as Minor Gods, as she wanted her family to stay with her. It is said, even, that she had some children with other Gods, particularly the God Janus, who would be Minor Gods by birth.   She did not raise up every child of hers, but some notable ones that did become Minor Gods include:
  • Myrine- Minor Goddess of Trials and Hope
  •
  • Bonkules- Minor God of Strength and Heroes

Sia

The Minor Gods in the faith of Sia are rather interesting figures, because there is a strong belief (backed by first-hand accounts) that there is no true Minor God around her, and that each other individual worshipped with Sia is merely a facet of her own identity, an extra personality that, at times, overtakes the Goddess of Knowledge.   Some of these include:
  • Zahid- Minor God of Horizons, Light, and Day
  •
  • Nadim- Minor God of Death, Darkness, and Burial
  •
  • Asbah- Minor Goddess of Water, Frogs, and the Oasis
  •
  • Aliyah- Minor Goddess of Truth, Fire, and Order
