Faith of Cutalazz

The faith of Cutalazz is not highly structured, instead there are local divisions of the faith, and these are structured as they see fit and as is needed. The faith of Cutalazz nearest the Blighthold for example, is highly organised, and regularly forms into Dancing Crusades to prevent incursions. Elsewhere, particularly in places such as Suden, where there is no great Blight threat, but regular wars, there tend to be local churches and influential figures. The glades in southern Arden boast the largest fortress of paladins to Cutalazz, the Monastery of Mull.   In Tun, the banking nation, the faith of Cutalazz is most powerful. As they say, the only certainties in life are taxes, and death – and best to laugh at them both.   The faith of Cutalazz travel a great deal, emulating the adventures of their Lord, and they bring laughter and amusement where they can, often helping loved ones cherish the fondest memories of those departed. When the loss is too great for humour, or even compassion to help, then the scions of Cutalazz are known for taking justice into their own hands. In lands where injustice has been done, or murder taken place, it is the people of Cutalazz who often investigate and pass judgement. For those who take a life before its appointed time, the laughter of a Cutalazzian is cold, merciless and terrifying.

Tenets of Faith

  • No Undeath shall be permitted to thrive;
  • Death is not to be feared, but welcomed and warmed;
  • Great violence or suffering must be ended;
  • Suffer not a murder to go unpunished;
  • Raise a glass to Cutalazz at the Great Festivals, and provide for those who cannot do the same;
  • Laughter is the greatest gift given to the world, embrace it often;
  • Mock those of dark heart, for it cuts them the deepest who crave power;
  • Heal often, help often, but when it is time for goodbye, step back;
  • Remember the dying and the dead with fond memories, save those who have brought evil in their wake – for those, remember them with every vice they performed;
  • Shadows and deceit are no match for Death, do not allow treachery to flourish.

Priesthood

Ranks within the faith:   There are no set ranks across the world for this faith, each local Church has its own. In general though, priests of Cutalazz are called Comforters.   Holy symbol / robes:   Laughing skulls, mulled wine spices, silver cup, smiling cat symbol, dice, lights and candles, jingling bells.   Approach to internal conflict:   People of Cutalazz will rarely fight each other but may if they serve different nations or realms. If openly displaying the arms or symbols of Cutalazz, it is forbidden that they would kill one another, or allow one another to die. Many realms will keep their paladins and clerics of Cutalazz for healing after a war, or for protection against the Blight, rather than to fight other realms.

Sects

Notable people:   Magister Haggard   The masked cleric of Cutalazz within the realm of Tun is the closest to a Living Saint of the faith as can be imagined. He has been a key figure in the realm of Tun for over two centuries, and although he rarely leaves the realm now, he has aided those most in need whenever he has been called. None know, or at least can remember, what he looks like beneath his laughing mask. Although Cutalazz has no organised faith, Magister Haggard has great sway across the world, and even a word from him to any other church of Cutalazz would carry immense weight.   Lady Alabaster Swan   A bard from the College of Swords, Lady Alabaster is part of the Council of Merchants in Esk. Once a jester in the Imperial Court of Estol, she fled from corruption and assassins, and made her home in the northern province. From there she built her fortune as an adventurer and performer and was honoured ten years ago with a place on the Council, and a noble rank of her own. She still adventures far and wide, and is a common feature when war comes with Estol.   Lord High Inquistor Malcolm Rek   A paladin of Cutalazz, Malcolm Rek is the current Master of Mull, the ancient fortress monastery of Death. Very little is known about his background, save that he came from the southern nation of Delvia, and now exists in the monastery, probing at the mysteries of death and ensuring that paladins and agents are sent to places at risk of war, undeath, plague and suffering. He is known to be a kind and gentle man, and well loved by his followers.   High Mage Rellis O’Shae   A wizard by trade, Rellis O’Shae appears throughout the world of Torthe wherever she is most needed. Some say she is a transmuter, changing fates around her. Others that she conjures what is needed, others that she can divine the future. Whatever the truth of it, Rellis is one of the most powerful followers of Cutalazz after Magister Haggard himself. None know where she makes her abode. Some say she must have an ancient airship, or some other travelling device, for she appears where she often has no reason to be.
