The Gorazhumat Clan
Background
With a primary ancestral lair location in central Oketh where the Tolima Range meets the Okethi Desert, this family of sapphire dragons has a history stretching back about a millennium, though much of their story has not become known outside of the dragons of Oketh until much more recently.
The progenitor and namesake of this clan, Gorazhumat, was an abiru (bigender) sapphire dragon hatched in the northern underdark of Oketh in the late 4th Century BCE, whose ancestors' deeds never became noteworthy enough to be recorded in history. In a trait perhaps shared more with their blue dragon counterparts in the Okethi Desert to the south of their homeland, Gorazhumat envisioned a future for themself as the head of a family that outlived them, rather than as an ancient dragon living in perpetuity off of a massive hoard that was solely their own. It took some time to find a partner willing to share this goal, but they eventually found their first partner Augniska in the mid 2nd century BCE. She was from a similarly modest lineage, albeit from the southern portion of the continent. Only a decade or so after their eldest daughter, Jadvigal was hatched, given their location more than anything else, they were called upon by the peoples of central Oketh to attempt to negotiate an agreement between Audrarith's parents (Veidrorith and Griaustithanach) and Kalbisaryx's parents, whose feud over the central Okethi Desert was having disastrous consequences. These negotiations were successful, and at some point in the following decade, they had their second wyrmling, Zhimov. However, the feud resumed when in 80 BCE, a young dragon from each of the families (exactly the trio of Audrarith, Kalbisaryx, and Jadvigal) disappeared under unknown circumstances. It took many more decades for peace to return to the desert, as Gorazhumat worked with the young Kalbisaryx (who returned after only a couple years away) to come up with a new set of agreements, but not until after Augniska was killed.
Cogadhnach, a sapphire dragon fleeing the territory of the giants of Gelindrend after the demise of the blue dragon Iymrith, met Gorazhumat on his journey to Oketh to attempt to meet with Veidrorith, Iymrith's daughter, and discuss revenge. Instead, Gorazhumat was able to calm his tempers and help him focus on the longer-term. Their friendship slowly developed into a more intimate relationship, and they remained partnered the rest of their lives, having several hatchlings along the way. Two of those remained in the family's territory into adulthood, alongside their step-brother Zhimov, and so it was from these three children of Gorazhumat that the clan continued to grow.
Sure enough, as Gorazhumat and Cogadhnach reached their 9th century of age in the mid 500s CE, they decided to not undergo the final Apeigo Kylanti (Ritual of Maturation) to become ancient dragons, but instead pass on their hoard to their descendants and let old age claim them. This helped to sustain the many dragons of the family now dwelling together in the Tolima Range, but only until around the time the first third-generation descendants started reaching adulthood. Together, as a large family, they sought a way to meet their increasing need for hoarded wealth from which they could draw the madjiga (the draconic magic of material essence) that sustains mature dragons. They ended up looking to the example of their clan's eldest daughter Jadvigal (wayward she may have been), whose Torrentha Academy of Adventuring in Omros had seen many centuries of success, and decided to found an academy of their own. Befitting the hoard-nature of sapphire dragons, their Grey Peak Academy instead focused on martial and military training, and thus the Gorazhumat Clan started to become recognized more widely across the world. Still, deep within the almost city-like expanses of their subterranean multi-generational lair, many of the dragons and half-dragons within the family retained a focus on the practice of magic and psionics.
