Session 17: The Defeat of Nezznar the Black Spider Report

General Summary

WAVE ECHO CAVE

The fight continues with Nezznar the Black Spider and his support that includes one remaining bugbear and four giant spiders.

Nezznar, realizing that someone has been able to silence him, tries to fall back so he can regain his access to spells. He is seen waving his hands but the party is unsure what he has cast.

Varis has hidden in the north while Nyx hides in the eastern edge. Dakari remains in the middle of the action and winds up getting surrounded and taken down by the giant spiders and bugbear.

Nezznar heads back into the fight and attempts to cast a spell but rages in anger when he discovers that he can only be seen and not heard within the area of silence

Some yelling from the south can be heard from a male voice but it is unclear who it might be

Nyx eventually goes down as well while Varis heads back north to the rushing water.

In time, Sildar Hallwinter shows up from the south and takes the fight to Nezznar. He can't believe the party would attempt to take on the Black Spider and his allies without more support.

Sildar winds up able to take down Nezznar but then gets taken down himself by the giant spider. The remaining bugbear and one spider go off in search after Varis.

Eventually, Dakari becomes stable. Too, as though the gods were on their side, both Nyx and Sildar also stabilize.

Meanwhile, Varis is able to take down the last giant spider. Then, he works to persuade the last bugbear to step down which he does. However, in deep sorrow for failing his master Nezznar, the bugbear throws himself to his death in splashing waves below.

Varis returns to the party and uses Conyberry to get everyone back to some health.

Now very bloodied and weakened, the party limps their way into the quiet room nearby to get some well deserved rest.

Sildar explains to the party that he had left Phandalin to go talk with Reidoth to see if he might know what the party intended to do since he is so knowledgeable about the goings on in the area. Reidoth wound up helping lead Sildar to the cave as one of the very few who knew its location.

In these moments, it is then discovered that the doppelganger back at the Cragmaw Castle Ruins, who was disguised as Gundren, also disguised herself as Sildar back when the party was with Harbin Wester at the Townmaster's Hall.

Sildar expresses interest to head back to the cave entrance to see how Reidoth and Gundren Rockseeker are doing.
