Aurumvas

Thomas had heard of the category 6 demon general named “Aurumvas.” The towering demon had a stack of crowns upon his hideous head. His Gaudy robe of platinum thread and jewels hung open and a constant stream of drool trickled down his bare chest. His eyes grew brighter as he consumed the soul of the goblin and he appeared to gain strength from it as his muscles visibly grew. He had demon minions at his feet dancing around. The demon sniffed the air and turned to the Stone bearers. He looked at them with a gleam in his brilliant green eyes. He said, “I smell magic items” as he looked at the party with greed that was far beyond that of even Gazlowe.

Near the minions were recently killed goblins and one of minions inhaled deeply breathing in the soul of one of the goblins. Immediately his form changed, first one arm, then another, then the legs, his head and finally his body caught up as the minion instantly evolved into a more powerful demon, a Ruinant. It turned and headed to the hall of goblins.

The 20’ tall demon Aurumvas stood 30 feet away from the Stone Bearers, staring at them expectantly. Thomas took out a magical potion and laid it on the ground as an offering. Thomas saw that Gazlowe was not about to surrender and looked at him with fear in his eyes, for only Thomas really understood the gravity of the situation. Gazlowe yelled out to the goblins in the tunnel beyond and said “Now is the time brothers! Charge! Juan blessed Thomas, Gazlowe, Abrash and Isabella. Gazlowe cast mirror image and Ajani and Isabella found some cover. Abrash summoned his fey spirit.

Fight or flight?

Thomas warned the party that this creature was extremely dangerous and suggested they run. Isabella raged and ran at the creatures. She killed 2 of the demon minions with one strike. Aurumvas inhaled and sucked in the soul of one of the dead demons and he grew stronger. Isabella then climbed on the leg of Aurumvas and started striking him with her axe. Thomas ran in with his whips and started striking and branded Aurumvas. Aurumvas used his legendary action to take one of Thomas’s whips and gave it to one of his minions. Ajani critically hit Aurumvas with a chromatic orb.

The remaining two minions spit at Isabella. Abrash’s fey killed one of the minions as it ran from him. Aurumvas smacked Isabella and was able to gain some temp HP by using one of his stored souls. He shot a bolt at Abrash and used two more of his souls to wipe away Abrash’s highest spell slot. Abrash was severely wounded. The goblins started attacking, killing the last remaining minion and hurt Aurumvas a bit. The Ruinant demon fought the goblins. Juan attacked Aurumvas and barely scratched him. Aurumvas threw several magical items near the party, and they exploded with force damage hurting everyone except for Isabella. Abrash’s fey creature was destroyed and Abrash was left with only 4hp. Abrash hit back with a chromatic orb and Gazlowe punched with his gauntlets.

At the top of the round Aurumvas altered time and re-arranged the initiative order letting him go first and Isabella going last. Aurumvas struggled and only landed one blow on Isabella. Thomas begged the party to retreat and Gazlowe, focused on all the treasure refused. Thomas dashed away to get help from the Dwarves. Ajani hit Aurumvas with a chromatic orb and bloodied him. The goblins killed the Ruinant. Aurumvas threw bombs at Isabella, Juan and Gazlowe. Juan was hurt badly. Juan tried to make Aurumvas grovel but failed. Abrash used his nature’s aid to heal Juan and Gazlowe. Gazlowe threw a splash potion of Supremior healing at Juan and healed him significantly, and then threw a punch at Aurumvas, barely hitting him.

Isabella climbed the Aurumvas’s leg and swung at his more sensitive areas. She struck hard and got his attention. Aurumvas struck Isabella twice leaving her near death. Ajani used his Healium and healed Abrash a bit. Aurumvas hit Juan and Gazlowe with 2 more of his bombs hurting the badly again. Juan laid his hands on Isabella and healed her. Abrash hit Aurumvas with another guiding bolt. Gazlowe hit himself with a Superiorior healing potion keeping him from death but then failed to land a hit on Aurumvas. Isabella continued hitting Aurumvas with her axe.

Aurumvas struck Isabella, Gazlowe and then Juan. The blow Knocked Juan unconscious. Fortunately, with help from Gazlowe, Juan was able to prevent Aurumvas from consuming his soul. Ajani shot a guiding bolt but missed. Seeing what his brother did, Abrash cast the same spell but hit Aurumvas, sending him back to the Abyss. The demon turned into a puddle of dark ichor, but the treasure was left behind!

Treasure

The party healed each other, and Thomas felt his brand dissipate so he knew Aurumvas was gone and he returned. Doing a quick look at what Aurumvas had left Gazlowe saw:
  • 700 gp (given to the goblins)
  • 30 pp
  • Aurumvas's robe worth 5,000 gp
  • Dwarven jewelry: 2 crowns, 3 rings, 2 Neck Collars (2,500gp) each.
  • Dwarven items within a huge satchel:
    • Robe of Useful items
    • 2 sets of Mariners chainmail
    • 1 Smoldering studded leather
    • 3 shields (Eye, Arrow, face)
    • +1 bracers of defense

The goblins

The party looked down the small passageway to see a group of goblins and hobgoblins. There were several dead goblins and demons. Some of the goblins stared angrily and one goblin in particular who held a staff and a spell book. The Goblin shaman also had a necklace made from a leather strap with some human teeth and 2 mummified human ears on it. As Gazlowe surveyed the treasure, the goblins shouted at him, “That’s ours!” Gazlowe yelled back in goblin, “If it weren’t for us, you’d all be dead.” And the goblins and Gazlowe went back and forth arguing about the Rules of Acquisition.

Seeing the goblins were distracted Abrash cast pass without a trace on himself and started discreetly putting the treasure items into the bag of holding. After some arguing the Shaman slammed his staff on the ground and said in Goblin, “Stand back this is ours!” The others heard a translation that was only slightly more offensive. The necklace he wore translated his goblin into Common perfectly, but the words were more directly tied to his emotional anger at the stone bearers and not as diplomatic as the goblin words may seem. The Shaman went on, “I speak for my tribe, this is all a mistake.” The shaman saw Gazlowe in the porthole of the armor and said, “I am M'Khiin Grubdoubler.” Gazlowe smiled and came out of the armor, M’Khiin recognized Galzowe and the two greeted each other as long lost friends. They talked about their old chief, “Donk” and how he “Accidentally died.” M’Khiin introduced the other goblins and the new “Chief” Ghadzook. They reminisced briefly and M’khiin’s attituded changed a bit now that he knew Gazlowe. He decided to offer a deal.

M’khiin’s problem

M’Khiin explained that he had a problem and whenever he thought about a demon one would appear. And sure enough, a demon minion came through the mist right before them. M’Khiin explained that at first, he had no problem controlling them but the more and more it happened the more he couldn’t control them and the longer they would stay. Isabella easily took care of the minion.

M’Khiin explained that a “Meatless elf” had pointed the goblins to an ancient city filled with treasure and protected by all sorts of undead. They found the tomb bound in human skin and after M’Khiin learned the “Summon infinite demon” ritual he became cursed by the dark magic. M’Khiin offered to split the treasure if the Stone Bearers help him get rid of the curse. Gazlowe glanced back and saw the treasure pile had already been mostly collected. At that point the goblins too looked, and they saw that most of the treasure was gone.

Gazlowe saw the looks of betrayal on the goblins faces and quickly explained that the whole reason that Stone Bearer’s came is because the theft of items disturbed the spirits of the Dwarves, and the reason they’re cursed is because of the stolen treasure. He started sniffing the goblins and convinced them that they’re all cursed by the treasure theft. Eventually M’Khiin and Gazlowe agreed that the goblins keep all the gold, and the Stone Bearers get everything else as long as the Stone Bearers remove all the curses. Gazlowe agreed but told M’Khiin that she’d have to come with him to a dwarven Cleric to have his curse removed. M’Khiin offered Gazlowe a special scroll if he brought the cleric to him. Plus M’Khiin would give him the map to the ancient city.

Cleansing the area

Gazlowe went to retrieve the cleric Darnath Stoneheart. Thomas stayed with the Goblins and took care of any summoned demons. Ajani collected the residue of the dead demons. Thomas also examined the “Summon infinite Demons spell and understood that to cast it means to be cursed.” Gazlowe arrived with the Dwarven Cleric Darnath Stoneheart and paid the 90gp fee to remove curse. She removed the curse and the yellowish mist disappeared. Isabella escorted Darnath back to the encampment.

M’Khiin provided Gazlowe with the scroll to create a necklace of language. One of the other goblins picked up a small stuff kobold from one of the dead goblins and gave it to the party saying in very bad common. “Thank you.” Jaun took the Kuddly Kobold. The party then bid the goblins farewell and proceeded back to the tombs to set the spirits at rest.

Ajani led the party to the first tomb and explained the process. The whole party worked together and was able to expertly set the spirits at rest without actually returning anything. The party spent the rest of the day, praying, dancing, examining, and guiding each other to complete the rituals at all the broken sarcophagi. After the last tomb was fixed and the spirit was put to rest, the party, very tired, made their way back up to the encampment outside the keep.

Thanks, from Ogian and the Dwarves

The party were greeted with cheers and thanks. The dwarven leader Warfus saw how tired Ajani was and gave him a “Belt of Dwarven Kind” in thanks for his expertise in leading the rituals to put his ancestors to rest. Ogian threw a vegetarian feast, and the Stone Bearers were celebrated for the evening. Many of the denizens of the Stronghold of the 9 offered their services and to aid in the Training of the Stone Bearers. They party leveled up to level 8.

Abrash met with Ghe’Bher and the Bear taught him how to increase his constitution with the Resilient feat. Thomas met with Mad Myrtle who helped him with the Resilient feat of Wisdom. He questioned her about her books of Niptu and learned that she isn’t really a student of his but simply views him like any other mage who created a spell or ritual.

Gazlowe met with the Dwarves who granted him the Squat Nimbleness feat. Ajani met with a Dwarf to told him, “When you aim small, you miss small.” And that blew Ajani’s mind. Ajani learned the Spell Sniper feat. Isabella worked with the dwarves who taught her how to get more damage from her axe. She learned the Savage Attacker Feat. Juan saw two dwarves continually head butting each other and from them learned the “Menacing” feat.

The party then split up the treasure they found. Thomas took the smoldering Studded Leather. Juan took the shield of many faces. Abrash took the Sentinel shield and Gazlowe took the shield with the arrow on it, only later to discover that the shield is actually a Cursed shield of Missile Attraction. They decided to keep at least one of the Mariner’s chainmail and sell the other (But not to the Dwarves.) Abrash studied the map of the underground passageway to find the ancient city. On the map it said “Warning, there be undead here!”

Ogian leaves

Ogian thanked the Stone Bearers profusely and tossed them the keys to the keep. He told them to take care of it until he returns and feel free to use the facilities. Gazlowe asked Ogian to make sure the Red Lady knows what they did and explained how bad of a person Eversus is. Gazlowe was so persuasive about Eversus that Ogian began to rethink his opinion of him. Ogian let all his servants know that the Stone Bearers are to be treated as heroes of the Stronghold of the 9. They were given full access to all the rooms and allowed to choose a bedroom of their choice to stay.

Ajani recruited Thomas to help him analyze the Demon ichor he found. They went to Mad Myrtle’s lab and discovered all sorts of information about Aurumvas’s abilities and resistances. The party explored the Stronghold of the nine and examined its defensives. Ajani found the library and learned the Sending spell. Later in the evening Abrash showed Gazlowe the sending stone they were given by the librarian in the Aboleth’s lair. Gazlowe was up for a prank call and sent a message to some random cultist who had escaped the lair.
