Wyvern Species in Toriel | World Anvil

Wyvern

Wyverns are winged cousins of drakes, and much like their cousins can appear with multiple elemental tendencies.

Culture

Mount

The Horseskull clan as a deep bond with wyverns. They respect wyvern, and defeating one is the only feat allowing orcs to become proud warriors, before riding the defeating wyvern.

Characteristics

Mental traits

Wyverns tend to be aggressive and highly territorial, yet not greatly intelligent. They are not averse to attacking anything less powerful than themselves.

Subraces

Astalos

Characteristics

Physical features
The body of Astalos is mostly covered in sharp, dark green plating, though it has a more bright-colored underside. Unlike most Wyverns, its wings resemble those of an insect, more specifically a Glasswing butterfly. Its tail makes up almost half of the monster's length, and has two pairs of pincers at the tip, similar to an earwig. It has a relatively small head, with a large horn on top of it. Its eyes are red, but occasionally turn green when it is charged.
Abilities
Astalos can generate green electricity by moving and rubbing its body parts, in which it can release this electricity from its wings, tail, and horn. Its wings have sharp claws, which it uses in ferocious dive-bombing attacks. It can paralyze prey with a strike from its tail, as well as fire bolts of electricity from it. Its horn can create a blade-like current of electricity, which extends the range of its horn attacks and also imbues them with the lightning. It can also breathe blasts of electricity which can split into two pillars upon impact with the ground.

Common Wyvern

These creatures are typically found in areas that are favored by dragons, such as tangled forests or large caverns.

Characteristics

Physical features
These creatures vary in length from 5 to 11 meters, weigh around a ton, and are covered in dark brown or grey scales. They typically have either red or orange eyes and their jaws are filled with long and sharp teeth. Unlike true dragons, wyverns have only a pair of hind legs instead of a set of four. Their impressive wingspan varies with the subspecies but can reach over 15 meter in length, while their tails are often quite long, comprising almost half of their bodies, yet remain highly mobile. At the end of their tails, a thick cartilage knot with a stinger protrudes, resembling that of a scorpion. Telltale sounds produced by these creatures include loud hisses and throaty growls, similar to the vocalizations of alligators.
Abilities
When fighting, these creatures dive down from above, grabbing prey with their hind leg claws, and then attempt to sting them to death. They are also known to slash at creatures with their claws mid-flight. Due to their long tails, opponents are typically struck by a wyvern's tail before their legs.

Diablos

Diablos are commonly found in dry, arid desert environments. The soft, loose earth allows for digging and the water-rich cacti provide them with both nutrition and hydration.

Characteristics

Physical features
Diablos are large, bipedal wyverns with powerful armor plating covering much of their body. Their most noteworthy feature is a pair of massive, solid bull-like horns above their red eyes. Diablos also possess a pair of tusk-like fangs and a large, spiny neck frill. Their tail ends with a heavy, studded club that can be used to ward off attackers. Diablos stand on a pair of stocky, wide-set legs and possess a broad upper body complete with thick, muscular wings.
Abilities
Diablos have the ability to burrow into the earth and travel underground, employing this tactic to surprise unsuspecting targets or slip away from a dangerous encounter. In addition, they are capable of producing a powerful roar that will stun most aggressors. Using their powerful legs in tandem with their heavy upper body and head, Diablos can run at high speeds to charge attackers with their horns, using the powerful momentum to maximize the potential for damage.

Rathalos and Rathian

Rathalos are male Flying Wyverns, and Rathian are their Female counterpart.
Rathalos by RJ Palmer

Characteristics

Physical features
Rathalos are large, bipedal wyverns with a spiny, armored hide covering their body. Their outer shell features much brighter and more vibrant colors than that of their female counterpart, the Rathian. It is primarily bright red, with black markings throughout. Like the Rathian, Rathalos possess a flame sac which is used to produce deadly flaming projectiles from the mouth. The talons upon their feet are highly poisonous and are known to inflict toxic mortal wounds on larger prey. In addition, their long, thick tail features a heavy spiked club at the end. Rathalos' wing membranes feature ornate patterns which are likely used to attract potential mates. Rathian is a medium-sized true flying wyvern similar in looks to her male counterpart, Rathalos. Her hide is a dull, muted green in contrast to the Rathalos's deep red, and her lower mandible features a long, protruding chin spike. Her upper back and wingtips are covered in a moss-like fur not seen on the Rathalos, and while her clubbed tail lacks bony spikes, it makes up for this with the presence of sharp and highly poisonous needles, which she can use to poison foes upon contact.
Abilities
Rathalos are expert flyers, and as such are prone to hunting from the skies. By launching a surprise aerial attack, they can inflict poisonous wounds with their talons or burn prey with flaming projectiles. On the ground, Rathalos remain formidable opponents. Using their powerful legs, they can chase down prey from a distance or inflict blunt-force damage with their clubbed tail. At a close enough range, they are known to use their sharp teeth to bite at foes as well. Some Rathalos are capable of staying in the air and launching a "few" fireballs before landing back to the ground. Rathian, like her mate, can generate flaming projectiles from her mouth. She is notably more proficient in the use of this weapon however, as she is commonly seen releasing multiple blasts at once. In addition, she is capable of charging up and releasing a more potent fire blast which can ignite a swath of ground in front of her. She can use the poisonous barbs on her tail club to inflict blunt-force, toxic wounds on foes, even if her tail was cut off. Her powerful legs allow her to run at high speeds, making her easily capable of chasing down most prey. Like the Rathalos, her vision is very keen.
