Plasmoid Species in Toriel | World Anvil

Plasmoid

Plasmoids are a type of ooze that are believed to have developed from Juiblex, the demon lord of slime and ooze. They possess a unique ability to alter their shape at will, and are said to have developed sentience and intelligence. Unlike other oozes and slimes, plasmoids are not under the control of Juiblex and are able to exist independently. They are considered rare and mysterious creatures, with little known about their origins or behavior. Some scholars theorize that plasmoids may have evolved from the various types of oozes and slimes found in the Abyss, and may possess unique abilities or properties as a result.

Culture

The concept of individuality does not exist within Plasmoid communities. While a single Plasmoid may think and function independently, within the colony, knowledge and information are shared by way of a sort of tactile telepathy. Outside of the colony, Plasmoid unerringly refer to themselves in the plural, even if they have adopted a unique name. Some researchers theorize that this is because each individual is itself a type of colony. Others posit that Plasmoids still retain some minute connection to their colony, even at a distance.
Immature Plasmoids are more akin to animals in their intelligence and primarily seek to feed on organic material so they can grow. For this reason, Plasmoids rarely reproduce outside of a colony, and if they do so, it is usually with the intention of forming a new colony in a carefully chosen location. When substantial nutrients are available, a Plasmoid colony can expand from only a few members to upwards of a thousand in a very short time. This said, Plasmoids are generally peaceful folk and have little interest in forming colonies in places that sentient creatures call home.

Characteristics

Physical features

Plasmoids are fundamentally unlike other sentient creatures. Where most creatures have bodies broken down into complex systems and specialized parts, Plasmoids consist of an acellular mass of creeping jellylike plasma. Their bodies are unique in that any part of that plasma might perform any function at any time. Similar to the way a colony of ants might act as a single massive organism, An individual Plasmoid is more like a mass of amoeboid cells, each with a minute intelligence of its own.
Plasmoids bodies are composed of cells, fibers, plasma-like ooze, and clusters of nerves. These nerves enable a plasmoid to detect light, heat, texture, sound, pain, and vibrations. Plasmoids can stiffen the outer layers of their bodies to maintain a humanlike shape, so they can wear clothing and accessories. They speak by forcing air out of tubular cavities that constrict to produce sound.
Plasmoids are amorphous beings with no typical shape. In the presence of other folk, they often adopt a similar shape, but there’s little chance of mistaking a plasmoid for anything else, It is not uncommon for Plasmoids to mimic the physical features of someone they are speaking to, leading to an eerie duplicity that many find unsettling. They consume food by osmosis, the way an amoeba does, and excrete waste through tiny pores. They breathe by absorbing oxygen through another set of pores, and their limbs are strong and flexible enough to grasp and manipulate weapons and tools. Although most plasmoids are translucent gray, they can alter their color and translucence by absorbing dyes through their pores.
The color of Plasmoids can vary anywhere between bright greens and blues, to dark greys and even blacks. More often than not, Plasmoids support themselves on a single flowing stalk, rather than two bipedal limbs.
When plasmoids sleep, they lose their rigidity and spread out and are thus sometimes mistaken for a rock or some other feature of the environment.

Biology

Plasmoids do not breed in the same way as other races. Instead when an "adult" has reached a substantial size, they may choose to divide themselves into multiple smaller individuals. These smaller Plasmoids share all the memories and experiences of their former self but lack the same humanoid intelligence, which will instead develop as they grow in size.

Names

Plasmoids lack a concept of individuality and don't use names among their own kind. However, they will commonly derive names from things they are called by outsiders for the sake of being understood by other races.
