Nexus

The Nexus is the ancient fortress of the blue dragonflight, found in the center of Coldarra in Northrend. With a network of ice caves underneath, a great column of magical energy bursts from its center, surrounded by levitating rings of land.

Geography

The Nexus is an extensive series of caves and tunnels that riddles the island of Coldarra. Every space has been carved and smoothed so that it seems more like a castle buried in ice than a natural formation. The walls are ice and Crystal, and cast rainbows of light from small glowing gems set in strategic locations; most flat surfaces are carved to show dragons in various activities. The floors are solid stone, polished glass-smooth and, mirror-bright. No stairs exist — in many places, an archway opens onto a vast open chamber and the dragons simply fly across to another portal placed somewhere on the other side. The outermost chambers are dotted with lifelike ice statues — or so it seems. These statues are the remains of uninvited guests, transformed by Dragon Magic and placed here as a warning. The caves themselves are fascinating, and many have unusual magical properties. Some of the rooms may actually change.

Features

Magical Well. Within 1 mile of the nexus, spell count as two-level lower for the purpose of using spell slots. Within 1,000 ft of the nexus, spell count as three-level lower for the purpose of using spell slots. Within 300 ft of the nexus, spell count as four-level lower for the purpose of using spell slots, and from this point on, for each 100 ft. toward the nexus, spell count as an additional level lower for the purpose of using spell slots.   For example, a fireball spell can be cast using a 1st level spell slot within one mile of the nexus, and a planeshift spell can be cast using a 3rd level spell slot within 300 ft of the nexus.

History

In 4201 BD, a group of High elves wizards infiltrated the Nexus in order to learn their secrets about magic. The High elves succeeded in learning the dragons' techniques, but their greed drove them into stealing some powerful artifacts. As they did so, the elves triggered magical wards, sending the silver dragons into frenzy. The elven thieves managed to escape the lair, but soon the dragons' retribution came to their city.

Nexus Overflow

Malygos, god of magic, driven by a desire to prevent future betrayals among gods and to avert further wars, he sought higher powers. In pursuit of this goal, Malygos caused the nexus—a link to the Elemental plane of weave that he protected—to grow and expand.   However, the consequences of his actions were violent. The burgeoning nexus caused the world's crust to splinter as the Weave flowed in immense quantities onto the material plane. This influx of magical energy infused everything, from plants to beasts to monsters, blessing many with the essence of the weave.
