The Mantis, also known as the Thri-Keen, are an insectoid monstrous humanoid race that primarily lives in the Underdark. They are known for their complex societies and organized structures.

Characteristics

Physical features

They have a distinct insectile appearance and two pairs of arms. Their bodies are typically covered in a hard chitinous exoskeleton, providing them with natural armor. They can alter the coloration of this carapace to blend in with their natural surroundings.
Although mantis don’t sleep, they do require periods of inactivity to revitalize themselves. During these periods, they are fully aware of what’s happening around them.
Mantis speak by clacking their mandibles and waving their antennae, indicating to other mantis what they are thinking and feeling. Other creatures find this method of communication difficult to interpret and impossible to duplicate. To interact with other folk, Mantis rely on a form of telepathy.

Mental traits

The Mantis are intelligent and possess a highly advanced culture, with complex social hierarchies and intricate systems of government. They are known to be skilled builders, constructing elaborate underground dungeons. Despite their fearsome appearance, the Mantis can be peaceful. However, they will fiercely defend their territories and people if threatened
