Leviathan Character in Toriel | World Anvil

Leviathan

Spirit of Water

The Leviathan is an elder elemental on the Elemental Plane of Water. Only one elder tempest can exist at any given time, a new one arising if the previous was killed. The Leviathan also represents the spirit of water and an ancient and powerful force.   The four primordial elemental spirits (air, earth, fire, water) are often referred to as the princes of the apocalypse.

History

In the beginning, the world that would become known as Toriel was ruled by the elementals. Without a spirit of the weave to create balance, the elements were thrown into chaos. The four princes of the apocalypse, who each ruled over innumerable lesser spirits, constantly clashed with one another on the surface of the primordial world. Leviathan was the wisest of the lords, careful not to fall to the Elder Tempest's schemes or waste his minions on fruitless attacks against Zaratan. As the other lords sent their armies to clash against one other across the world, the Leviathan's forces would divide and conquer the enemy forces in brilliant routs before crushing them beneath colossal tidal waves.   When the gods arrived, the Elder Elementals saw the invaders as a threat to their dominion. For the first time in Toriel's history, the native spirits of the world worked together against a common enemy. Leviathan joined forces with Zaratan; while the Spirit of earth raised enormous rock walls to corral the forces of the Old Gods and shatter their citadels, the spirit of water and his minions would sweep in and crush the enemies with tidal waves   Eventually, however, the world could not stand the princes of the apocalypse power, and with the help of the gods, they were banned out of Toriel, into planes that later became the elemental plane corresponding to each Elemental lord.
