Keep of the shadow drake

This set of black towers resembles a tangled grove of trees more than any fey architecture. At various times, it has been seen on the Whispering Plains, as an island in the Shade Sea, and even as a dark cloud castle floating over the hills. Rumors run rampant that the keep of the shadow drakes is filled with the bones of a thousand shadar kai or with the grimoires of a hundred mages or with the wealth of generations of gnome and human traders. Some even believe that it commands a radiant well that is somehow harnessed to provide arcane power (just as one might tap a barrel of wine). A few claim that the whole building is inscribed in Draconic with the history of the Ancients, who (in this telling) were shape-shifting dragons.   Eggshells litter the courtyards, lending concrete evidence of how dragons and drakes used to nest in the keep in breeding season, and the keep became an attraction for merchant and treasure hunter as dragon eggshell is an extremely precious material.

History

It was raised by Nonderil, an elder shadow dragon, as a gift to his mate, Violanda, and it became a place of draconic power as well as a school for mages of the traditions of shadow and illumination.   When the keep was seen, it was surrounded by dozens of drakes, dragonettes, and dragons used to nest there because they are the only ones capable of opening its gates and doorways. While bones and books are found there, more often, the Keep of the Shadow Drakes was a nesting ground for drakes, protected by their elders, and the dragons and drakes of the Shadow Realm gathered there until their wyrmlings hatched and then departed as soon as their progeny could fly, leaving the place to some other type of draconic flock looking for a perfect nesting site. Nowadays shadow dragons aren't as common.
