Fade Weaver Spider - CR: 1/8

Silk and Spell

Delicate silk spreads through arid caves or Acacia branches, light hitting just right so as to see the most complex spider webs one could find. Following these nearly invisible threads one may see individually wrapped insect meals, and those who wrap said meals. Individual or swarms of strikingly blue spiders crawl and spin silk almost manically that almost seem to flicker or pulse as you draw near. Threatened by what would seem like a large predator, the spiders reveal their hidden talent for spell craft, releasing fire or sleep from their silken homes, in hopes of repelling you, and salvaging their food.

Legend or Theory?

It's said that spells as we know them, were re-granted to mortals, more specifically high elves, in the first or second century ALG by their patron art the time, Fara'Halai. several theories have been placed forward on exactly how, but one theory explains that the Spring Deer simply guided these mortals to observe Fade Weaver Spiders. Looking at the complex runes made through primal instinct, it's a natural marvel at the power a simple spider could create.

Acorn Sized Skitters

Fade Weaver Spiders are striking blue, eight limbed arachnids who faintly glow pale blue or white light from their eight eyes. They have small cephalothorax and chelicerae, which is vastly outshined by their fairly large (for their size) abdomens. The fade weavers spinnerets seem to be one of the most complex spinnerets ever documented for various spiders. Fade Weaver's spinnerets have several extremely small and precise arms which accurately create the runes necessary for creating their spell webs.

Basic Information

Ecology and Habitats

Encounter by Generic Biomes: Coasts, Deserts, Grasslands, Mountains, Savannahs

Encounter by Specific environments: Caves, Trees, Rocky Craggs

Arid and Windy

Fade Weavers prefer windy and arid environments. When they grow and dwell in deserts, they typically do so in windy cave networks where sand and rock does not get stuck in their webs, and many insects take shelter during the day. Otherwise Fade Weavers settle near watering holes either in savannahs or mountains with plenty of wind to allow their young to glide away on silk carried by the wind.

Common Spell Web

Description

Spell web is spider silk with arcane patterns weaved through it's branches. These arcane and draconic runes are said to be the root of old arcane practices, as these webs function in the same way spell scrolls do in modern day.

Use / Effect

Common Spell Web, when harvested contains a random 1st level spell or Cantrip within it, in the same way a spell scroll does. These spells may be common knowledge, lost to time, or brand new creations, however they all follow the same rules as spell scrolls.

Passing through old Peryl mineshafts, or caves of the Sparking Waists Desert, one would not typically stop to look at the webs of spiders. But for those versed in history or perceptive in magic, one may know how much nature has given to society, irrelevant of intention. Fade Weavers are tiny blue spiders who create tapestries of magic out of their silk. Their 8 white eyes thrum with small motes of arcana, and their webs act almost like spell scrolls which allow them to cast spells from their webs when threatened. Fade Weavers typically have two spells within their webs at a time, most often an evocation to ward of predators and an enchantment to catch prey.

It's said that many spells originate from wizards taking the time to study Fade Weaver's webs, and that spell scroll making originated here as well.
