BACKSTORY
Winfield grew up in the mountains south of Nousha in a loose confederation of camps and hamlets. There is a strong line of shifters and lycanthropes in this area of the world. When he was 17 he "did his duty" and joined the army of Nousha.
He was in the Wraith Squad of the Nousha army for 5 years, where he fought in the "war of XX". He fought in many of the signature battles and acquitted himself well. Upon discharge he returned back to the Kin.
For the last 20 years he has raised a family, become the patriarch of an extended beekeeping family and business, and generally lived the life of country-gentility.(edited)

. . . . and now for some "immersive backstory"
FIRST LETTER HOME
Dear Mawmaw -
I made it to Nousha just fine and joined the army here. I will do the Kin proud and pay the obligation to the king for our land. I have been assigned to the normal army as a "pikeman"(which is like the bee-staff we use, but with a metal point!). The guys and girls here are all pretty nice and we are all learning our way.
Love
Winfield
SECOND LETTTER HOME
Dear Mawmaw -
Sorry for the delay in this letter. Soon after my last missive, we were called into battle where we fought soldiers from XXX. We carried the day, but many of the people on our side were grievously wounded or died. It was much worse than I thought it would be.
I fought well thought, and they re-assigned me to the scout division, where some of my backwoods know how will come in handy.
Winfield
PS- The guys loved the honey treats - send more!
THIRD LETTER HOME
Mawmaw -
Much has transpired since I last sent word. I have been in many skirmishes and have been reassigned to the Wraith Squad in the scout division. It was not really called that, but a few of us mis-heard "wait squad" as Wraith squad, and the name stuck!
The Wraith Squad seems to be where the folks that don't really fit in anywhere else end up. And then, they use us on the odd-duck missions.
The guys are great, and I am helping as I can. With some of the things you showed me, I have proven oddly effective. The folks have started calling me Mother because I make sure everyone is doing OK.
Love,
"Mother" Winfield(edited)

FOURTH LETTER HOME
Mawmaw -
I miss the hollows and streams of home. The Wraith Squad has been on many missions over the last 6 months and many friends have perished or moved on. Right now the squad is about 15 people strong, and I am close with 4 or 5 of the guys.
Tiny is my fellow brother in arms. He is big and strong and protects the front with me. We have a strange little dude named Volta - he is good at most things and I play music with him - he uses a fiddle, and I use my mouth harp. Some guys play drums too.
We are prepping to go up the Quai River and take out a bridge. After that, I think my time will be over in the army and I will be coming home!
"Mother" Winfield
PS - do you know if Sheila Flowerbell is betrothed? If she isn't, please give her my regards.
FIFTH LETTER HOME
Mawmaw -
Good news, I am mustering out next week! The assault on the River Quai worked great. Khamas (a quiet mage in our squad) proved to be the secret key to us succeeding. We did so well, that our sergeant (a Halfling holy warrior that rides a dog!) Billy Tallfellow actually smiled and went drinking with us after we got back.
I am sad to leave my companions, but am even happier to get back to the Kin. Thank you for the update on Sheila Flowerbell. I am pleased that she returns my regards.
"Mother" (not for long!) Winfield.(edited)
