Brizanthria al-Mahir
(a.k.a. Breezy)
Declared (and self-declared) as "Breezy is the cutest mage in Toivoa."
Backstory
Reza al-Mahir and Zara al-Mahir were having a difficult time conceiving children and tried for a couple of decades. Just when they were about ready to give up however, something strange happened. On the Winter Solstice 16 years ago, in the middle of the freezing night, a baby was left on their doorstep. The baby was only lightly covered, but did not seem bothered by the cold. The only thing in the basket with her was a note with the word “Brizanthria” written on it. They assumed it was her name and took her in. A few years later, they did manage to have the twins naturally. Breezy was an odd child for various reasons. Her perfect memory manifested when she was about 2 and a half years old. She was speaking perfectly by the age of 3. Seriously, imagine how weird it is for a 3 year old to have the ability to speak and communicate all their weird 3 year old ideas to others in perfect adult English. The other strange thing about her was her odd hair and eye colors. But other than that she was perfectly normal and healthy. Luckily for Breezy, Reza al-Mahir and Zara al-Mahir were wonderful parents and she grew up in a loving, happy home. She quickly became an outgoing, friendly and curious young girl, and the townsfolk of Ma’Barid quickly grew to accept her odd quirks. Breezy grew up and spent the time she wasn’t playing or bothering the townsfolk by working at the Lodge. She was a server and often entertained the locals and traders passing through town with party tricks involving her memory. She was famous in that small, local kind of way. Caravan guards would often remember the friendly little tavern girl with the perfect memory. A bard passed through town one day and played at the Lodge. One of the songs he played enamored Breezy and it’s still her favorite song to this day. After he left, Old Man Congar offered to teach her the fiddle so she could play it. Last year when she was about to turn 15, a wizard named Mollix stayed at the inn and ended up staying the whole winter. He was very impressed by Breezy’s intelligence and taught her some basic magic. After seeing how much talent she had, he wrote a letter of recommendation to the Grand Library of Chader-Shadi. Breezy traveled there next spring and was able to ace the entrance tests easily. At the age of 15, she became the youngest mage (comparatively, different species age differently after all) ever accepted to the Magic School at the Library. Her time at school was the first time in her life she ever faced any real adversity. She was bullied by many of the other students due to her bumpkin accent, low social status and very young age. Most of the other students were in their early 20’s. Despite being miserable, however, she still got perfect scores on all of her tests and work. It was during this time that she met Refaj Al-Jabar, The Mustachioed Wizard. He came across her while she was crying in a side room. He was actually quite nice to her and gave her some genuine words of encouragement. They developed a friendship and she began bouncing some of her wilder ideas off of him. She actually learned A LOT from him. One day, Refaj Al-Jabar, The Mustachioed Wizard realized that one of her equations was actually quite brilliant and fitted in neatly with some of his own scholarly work. So he cast modify memory on her while she was sleeping, erased the equation from her notes and stole her research. He realized there was something strange about her when she angrily confronted him several days later, completely unaffected by the memory spell. Breezy made a complaint of plagiarism to the school board. Unfortunately, Refaj Al-Jabar, The Mustachioed Wizard had deleted the specific section of her notes, and her hasty appeal did not have any real evidence behind it, so it was just her word vs his. Naturally, her claim of plagiarism was rejected. Humiliated, miserable and utterly alone, Breezy did the only logical thing. She ran off to Shau to find old ruins in order to do field research to prove that she’s smarter than everyone else. It’s important to note that Breezy is still admitted to the Grand Library of Chader-Shadi. She has not been expelled. The School actually does have mechanisms for marking students as on leave or in the field. Refaj Al-Jabar, The Mustachioed Wizard made sure to place her in this category to make sure she remained admitted because despite his assholishness, he genuinely does think that she has an extremely bright future and not allowing her access to the Library would be criminal in his opinion. Breezy has no idea he did this though and has just assumed she’s been expelled. And the rest is history.
