Voidmatter Crystals

"Think of it as a battery for magic users. The crystal is like the battery's casing, while the Voidmatter inside is like the battery acid."
"Sure, if batteries were super rare and expensive and could kill you from a simple crack in the casing."
— Miss Jackson teaching, Medea Smith muttering a response
The Voidmatter inside the Crystals is what truly gives them their power, however, Voidmatter itself is too dangerous and volatile to be used in its natural form, toxic to every known sapient species.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Voidmatter Crystals vary in shape and size depending on what strength they are. They appear as cold and clear crystals with swirling clouds of navy blue matter shifting inside like ink in water. The density of these clouds also depends on the strength of the Crystals, with weak ones being no more than an inch long with only a drop or two of blue inside, while the strongest known Voidmatter Crystal is over 5 meters tall and contains Voidmatter so dense that it appears as a black crystal with tiny swirls of blue inside.

Geology & Geography

Voidmatter, the substance which is stored in the Crystals, is found in the greatest quantities within the perilous Netherworld. Only small pools of Voidmatter are found on the Mortal Plane, mostly around locations where the walls between worlds are thin or in Cryptid locations such as the Bermuda Triangle.

History & Usage

Everyday use

Voidmatter Crystals are rare as they are so dangerous to make. The only people who may use them every day are skilled Mages or Warlocks who seek to perform extremely taxing and powerful spells or wish to research the Arcane or Fel arts. Though Shamans also have the ability to harness these crystals, they rarely use them, preferring to use Totems instead. Other magic uses do not have compatible magic types to harness Voidmatter Crystals.   Voidmatter Crystals can also be used to power machines in place of electricity and are quite often found in the larger Mage Towers, Warlock Spires and Magical Research facilities.

Hazards

If the proper precautions are not taken during the process of containing the Voidmatter within the Crystals, exposure to the Voidmatter will cause a sapient being's body to disintegrate. This is generally considered painful, judging by the screams of the victims as they died.   However, some believe that exposure to Voidmatter causes the body to change form rather than be destroyed, causing the victims of Void Exposure to become new Void Creatures.

Distribution

Law & Regulation

Those who manufacture Voidmatter Crystals must have the correct permits and pass the regular safety inspections. Those selling the Crystals undergo similar scrutiny and must possess a certain licence to sell them.   You must be considered an adult by law in order to purchase a Voidmatter Crystal.
