Luminurgy
Overview
Luminurgy refers to the ancient and slightly more esoteric discipline, with variations rooted throughout many cultures with considerably different levels of application. It is based on the manipulation of the universe’s fundamental forces and radiant energies that flow throughout the cosmos. While the exact origins are unknown, the practice is assumed to come from one long extinct species, known to most as the Veorites, that seeded themselves amongst many different world’s cultures.
Practitioners, known as Lumiwrights are enlightened individuals who over many years of study and careful establishment to cosmic energies enabling them to tap into the near boundless potential of Lumin. It is a laborious act that demands years of training but with the right rituals, gestures, and specialised tools, Lumiwrights can perform a range of wonderous feats including telekinesis, elemental manipulation, healing, and even divination. It is widely believed many species that possess innate telekinetic abilities or mastery of matter, tap into this enigmatic power source without realising.
Known to more primitive cultures as "magic" or "sorcery" it is little wonder that many stood in awe and amazement seeing it performed. In its prime Luminurgy was once held in high esteem with its practitioners revered as wise and powerful sages who often served as protectors and advisers to great rulers.
Historical Development
As time progressed and technology developed, many new inventions allowed a more practical and cheaper alternatives to the applications of Luminurgy. In addtion on many worlds, superstition arose surrounding this complex ancient technique which led to many cases of persecution practitioners of the craft. Because of this, much original knowledge, which was often passed down from master to apprentice was lost, leading modern day Lumiwrights to yield mere fractions of the power beholden to their ancestral counterparts.
Cultural Perception
While technologically advanced or enlightened worlds do not forbid the practice, with some races such as the Xalax yielding considerably similar powers, Luminurgy is now seen as a retired and outdated practice in many cultures with some regarding it more as folklore. Remaining Lumiwrights struggle to preserve their fading heritage as many find their craft confided to party tricks and minor illusions in a growing universe of holograms and forcefields.
It has seen a resurgence amongst more eccentric individuals and scholars in recent years, sparking some talk of a potential renaissance for the ancient art though this has been met with both curiosity and scepticism alike.
