Winged Haven

Those new to Ananport are often surprised by the capitol’s cleanliness and order. Visitors and new settlers who come from the smaller villages in Tjiramor have heard tales of the dangers of a large city.    They expect to be robbed in the streets and cheated by merchants. The more adventurous among newcomers are surprised by the lack of opportunities for pleasure. Perhaps their parents or village elders warned them to stay away from districts where men and women of all backgrounds and lineages sold themselves for purposes best now spoken of in mixed company and around young ears.   But Ananport doesn’t appear to have any such places. At least not at first glance.   A few coins in the right hands may earn the newcomer the words “Winged Haven.” The more observant might notice a strange popularity to the capitol’s largest cemetery, particularly after the sun has set when any respectful mourner might be safe at home.   The Garden of Peace covers well over 3 acres of land. Due to Ananport’s proximity to the sea, the dead reside in above-ground tombs. Some are elaborate mausoleums, while others are stone boxes piled on top of one another.   The cemetery is known for its statues of winged servants. The statues have been a part of the Garden since it was built. Careful observation of the statues show that some of the oldest have been restored so their graceful arms point in new directions.   Following the statues’ arms, or the nightly foot traffic, one might find themselves at a relatively modest tomb. The tomb is relatively plain, except for two wings carved on either side of the tomb’s door.   A few more coins to the men guarding the door just inside the wings will allow a visitor access to the stairs. The stairs lead to an underground pleasure palace. The marble of the tomb gives way to walls hung with tapestries and pillows strewn through the network of rooms and tunnels.   No one knows if Winged Haven only extends under the Garden of Peace or if it branches further under the capitol. Rumors swirl about secret passages from the city’s temples and government buildings. At least one passage extends from the Reve Inn, Ananport’s most luxurious accommodations.   Visitors and regulars can find all means of pleasure available for hire: drugs, liquor, gambling, sex, and even violence. Money doesn’t often exchange hands though, unless one wants to feast and drink and indulge in forbidden substances. Most who come to Winged Haven are seeking each other. Assignations are mutually agreed upon. Willing partners can be found for any vice.   A few will sell their services, but the Winged Haven is about mutual satisfaction in all aspects.
