The Night Run

Every five years, Llareffe's two moons Soricos and Lilba line up and completely block the sun. The total eclipse has become an occasion of celebration. Feasts, fireworks and frivolity take place all across Tjiramor as its citizens rejoice in knowing that the false night will soon give way to the return of the sun.   Legend says that the first celebrations were attempts by Tjiramor's citizens to cajole the Light Bringer into returning the sun to the sky or perhaps to convince Him they were worthy of the light by refusing to show fear in face of the unusual darkness.   The celebrations begin as soon as Soricos begins to block the sun. They pause as totality occurs. The kingdom falls silent, even the animals cease their noises.   At the eastern edge of Tjiramor, the Night Run is about to begin. Runners from throughout the kingdom gather in Fort Thobe on the coast. They track the return of sunlight as it brightens the ocean. As it nears the shore, the runners take off as one.   They re-enact their forefathers' journey to tell the rest of the kingdom that the Light Bringer had heard their prayers and returned the sun to the sky. For four hours, the runners race the growing light. Many runners are overtaken by the sun, but these runners have not failed. They rejoice as the sun's rays touch them and join the celebrations in whatever town they happen to be in.   A few runners are fast enough and tough enough to keep running west. Eventually the sun overtakes all of them, reminding the runners and spectators of the Light Bringer's power.   Celebrations continue throughout the day until the sun sets and true night falls. Wagons return runners to their homes, where they are feted.
