Wheelchairs Vehicle in Tiyu Amara | World Anvil

Wheelchairs

If there is one thing I wish my grandfather would do - well, there are many things, I suppose - but the one thing I'd like right now, is for him to use his influence to get the roads paved properly. They're already hard enough to walk on with one leg, but by the divinities, trying to wheelchair down the pavement feels like a death wish in motion.
— Lord Hintero "Tero" Shonyul-Ishir
Wheelchairs are used throughout Abravost by sick or disabled people, both young and old, to help them get around if they cannot walk. They are more common in highly urbanised areas, rather than in the rural countryside.

Materials and Construction

The majority of wheelchairs are constructed from metal, owing to their sturdiness and the lower incidence of warped wheels than in wooden variants. The latter still exist, especially in poorer areas which cannot afford metal in large enough quantities. Some users choose to accessorise their wheelchairs, with gold or silver trims and the addition of gems like Dragon's Blood or sapphires. Fabrics will also be included to create a more comfortable sitting experience.   There are two main types of wheelchairs - self-propelled, and attendant-propelled. The construction of the latter can range from purpose built designs to a typical chair with wheels and handles attached. The former are always custom made and intended to allow the user to get around on their own, which special rims added to the wheels for the users to grip.

Rocky Road

A considerable hurdle in the path of many wheelchair users is the state of the paths they need to navigate, which non-disabled people will rarely notice. In rural towns, wheelchairs can become bogged in mud, while in cities they can rock and jolt around over the cobblestones. The Republic of Skarhu is the world leader in wheelchair accessibility, working with the community to improve road access. Not all their fellows have adopted their standards, unfortunately.
