"The island where the Yuan-ti originate from is home to an absurd number of snakes of all sizes even before Tiamat's head landed there which is why the people assumed the dragon head was a similar type of creature. The capital city of the Yuan-ti is called Teyamut named after their snake goddess which is a misunderstanding of Tiamat.
The ancient Yuan-ti used magic to claim the power of their dead god, unintentionally making themselves more draconic. Later on similar rituals using actual serpents created more.
