The Party
Synopsis
It's year 203 of the
Age of Dragons. The Lavandin Monarchy centuries from its inception. This is a time when settlers begin to expand across Kauvet in earnest. As they do so, many encounter the creatures that occupy the land, sky, sea, and underground of this place -
Dragons. There is no set rule as to whether or not one can expect hostility from these powerful creatures. For the last two centuries and change, dragons have been studied, worshipped, avoided, hunted and more. As settlement spreads, these fiercesome creatures become more and more reclusive in locales dangerous or difficult to reach, but not all of them go quietly.
A minor lord of a newly settled town hire fives adventurers to take care of bothersome young bronze dragon named Em'jaygh who lives in a nearby cave and has been making it difficult for the settlers to establish farmland. When the party arrives, Em'jaygh greets them with a meal served by a small retinue of warforged originally mistake for normal statues. The dragon asks to hire the party away from the lord who sent them so that they might escort him to a sacred draconic ritual site in the mountains. He promises the the party a reward of wishes and grants them magical boons to prove his intent. The party agrees, turns Em'jaygh invisible to get him out of the cave unnoticed by the settlers, and they fly on the dragon toward the mountains.
Throughout all of this, a sinister, serpentine voice is in Rassha's head, encouraging them onward. Em'jaygh recognizes this to a degree and tells Rassha he hears the voice too. Unbeknownst to either, Rassha is hearing the voice of
Tiamat while Em'jaygh is hearing the voice of his father,
Bahamut.
They eventually touch down on the bald peak of Io's Wing, a significantly taller piece of the norther mountain range that slightly resembles a dragon's wing and is named for the progenitor god of all dragons. They make their way to the ritual site, a small forest grove tucked into the center of the mountain's peak wherein lies a stone ritual wall. Em'jaygh presses himself against the center of the wall and begans chanting a call in draconic. An arcane shield wraps around the dragon while the party takes up defensive positions around him.
By this point, the voice in Rassha's head is eager, assuring Rassha he is on the right path, and bleeding into Galax's head as well.
The party faces off against three waves of enemies drawn to the circle by the magical beacon created by the ritual. The first wave is a pair dragon wyrmlings - one red, one white. The second is a blue dragon wyrmling, black dragon wyrmling, and a wyvern. The party works together to dispatch each threat unaware of what is coming.
Finally, members of serpent cult that Rassha belongs to arrive in the grove, pulling with them a wagon carrying the skeletal head of a large beast - possibly a snake, maybe a dragon.
Rassha joins forces with his brethren against the party while Jaxt takes the opportunity to cause her favorite brand of chaos by playing both sides of the fight. What ensuees is a long and hard fought battle between former allies some intnet on either protecting Em'jaygh or disrupting the ritual for their own gains. Abishae, the leader of the snake cult, removes Krogrom from the fray by charming him and sending him down the mountain. After a long back and forth between the foes, the majority of the cultists are defeated by Galax and Rosethorn who narrowly defeat Jaxt.
Meanwhile, Rassha and the Abishae (along with Jaxt before they are killed) succeed in lowering the shield around Em'jaygh who's strength has been significantly reduced by the ritual. Galax and Rosethorn, weakened from the ordeal are not powerful enough to save Em'jaygh. The dragon is slain and his soul is magically fused with the skeleton broght by the cultists, which both disappear in a flash of blinding light. One team has succeeded in their mission, the other has failed, but the fight isn't over.
Rosethorn and Galax do all they can to prevent Rassha, the Abishae, and the one remaining cultist from leaving the ritual grove alive. As the battle rages, Rosethorn is defeated and though she is stable, lies unconscious as Rassha finally slays Galax and departs with his compatriots.
Rosethorn awakes to find Kromgrom returned to take her away from the mountain. They return to Kromgrom's home to recover, while the cultists return to their base of operations intent to teach Rassha exactly what has just transpired.
The ritual would have returned Em'jaygh to his father's side, adding to their familial strength and strengthening Bahamut's power as The Platinum Dragon. By stopping him, they were able to fuse his soul with the skelton of Tiamat's green head, returning her to her sisters. Thus, the forever hatred between the two dragon gods is born anew.
