Mithril Falls Settlement in Tin Star Thaumaturge | World Anvil

Mithril Falls

“Mithril Falls is the finest town on the Sharesessi Frontier! Why, it has everything a person could need. Fine lodging, bountiful food and ample jobs! Or rather, it did, I suppose. Things haven’t been the same since the Hedgecock Mithril Mine stopped producing – but don’t you worry; we’ll be back on our feet in no time. I’d guarantee that old mine has life in it yet. Until then, we’re still the best option for supplies between Lake Naradin and Westgate.” – B.B. Bentley, Mayor of Mithril Falls

Demographics

Mithril Falls is a diverse town due to its frontier nature. The mayor is a halfling, the saloon keeper is a tiefling and the local gun store is owned by an orc. Overall, the population is evenly split between humans, elves, dwarves, tieflings, halflings and gnomes.

Government

Mithril Falls, as a relatively small town, has very little in the way of government. The mayor handles most day-to-day problems related to infrastructure and taxation. He also facilitates any necessary interaction with the federal government of the Venitas Confederacy. The sheriff, in theory, provides any necessary law enforcement. Should a judge be needed, the nearest VCA court is in Lake Naradin – roughly two days travel away.

Defences

Mithril Falls is set into the Plainsdrop Cliffs, making entry impossible from any direction other than the west. A frontier wall of thick timber protects this path into the town - along with a well constructed gatehouse. The town is reliant on the sheriff and deputy for law enforcement. Most citizens own a gun, and will rally to the town's defense as necessary. In a worst case scenario, troops can be called in from Fort Powderfolly.

Industry & Trade

Mithril Falls is a boomtown that cropped up to service the Hedgecock Mithril Mines. When the mines stopped producing, they were forced to considerably lessen the scope of their industry. They still provide supplies and entertainment for miners that operate at the copper mines to the north, but the town is suffering from the mithril mine closure.

Infrastructure

Despite its size, Mithril Falls is an advanced settlement. Close proximity to the canyon dwarf territories allowed them to adopt some of the technological features of the dwarf’s society. The falls themselves run off into a watermill that provides a small amount of electricity. At this point, it’s more of a curiosity than a working grid. The roads are well-packed with gravel and a cut above the dirt trails that pass through most of the Sharesessi Desert. While little progress has been made so far, it’s clear that the Venitas Confederacy intends for the Trans-Avistatian Railway to pass through or near Mithril Falls.

Assets

Mithril Falls serves as a major trading hub for the eastern Sharesessi brushlands. Deceit Caulfield's 'Whole in the Wall' Saloon provides entertainment and lodging to travelers. Barabur's Gunworks is available for purchasing firearms and ammunition, as well as providing repairs. The Milford's General Store sells most necessary sundries. Quimora Sageleaf's Antique and Curios Store sells spell components, gemstones and some random junk she found in the desert.   The Venitas Confederacy established a post office, a telegram service and a bank within Mithril Fals.

Architecture

As a frontier town, Mithril Falls architecture is mostly utilitarian. Wood from the Avistatian Plains is used in the vast majority of construction, with any decorative elements dependent on the aesthetic and ability of the person owning the house. City Hall is the only structure made from stone, and is built in a neo-imperial style.

Geography

Mithril Falls is built into a cleft in the Plainsdrop Cliffs. The idea came directly from the canyon dwarf territories, where most settlements are built in a similar fashion. It aides in heat regulation during the day, while insulating the town from wind. The falls themselves provide a constant supply of fresh water at the back of the cleft - forming the town's pond.

Natural Resources

The town itself has little in the way of valuable natural resources. Some stone can be extracted from the cliffs. The surrounding area, however, has many mines of various types.
