Wanderer's Rest

Wanderer's rest is the last stopping point on the way to the northern reach and as such, once thriving community of farmers, traders and mercenaries, the city is now in state of disrepair. It is ruled over by Baron Chant or 'Red Nose' due to him being a purple teifling but having a bright red nose from a long life spent drinking. The City has stagnated under Chant's rule and it is a hub of drunkenness and debauchry, however the tax money keeps rolling in from the underground criminal sydicates operating in the city, in order to keep the eyes of the Royal Guard and the King away from Wanderer's Rest. The majority of the city lives in poverty with the more wealthy residents living in gated complexes with idependantly hired guards (think johannesburg).   Government   The Council of Wanderer's Rest is weak and the majority are in the pockets of the various gangs in the city. Whilst there are various guilds in the city they have very little power, helping the civilian population in whatever ways they can after paying ridiculous 'protection' money to the criminal elements within the city.   Security   Chant and his personal guard do not have the strength or numbers to police the city instead contracting mercenaries to do it instead. They care very little for actually keeping order instead drinking and gambling turning a blind eye to the gang activity in the city. The city is mostly kept in order through uneasy truces between the gangs and criminal syndicates.   Point's of interest   Wanderer's rest has a suprisingly active arts and entertainment comunity, mostly funded and protected by the Top Hats, for a price. Street theatre is a common sight as are buskers, magicians and various other types of street performers and conmen. There are serval large more touristy tavens with private security, comfortable rooms and quality inhouse entertainment. These places are pretty exclusive and strict wth their clientele not tolerating any troublemakers or vagabound looking types. These establishments bost the highest prices for room, board and drinks outside of the capital. The alternative to these are, the majortiy gang run or affiliated, inns, taverns and bars around the city. These places are not safe or welcoming and whilst it may be better than sleeping in the streets, The Adventurer's guild hand book advises against having all of your party sleeping at once in these places to reduce loss of possessions or good health, instead recommending sleeping in shifts. Shops and traders tend to have a very limited stock and getting anything better than basic gear will require some kind of gang connection.
