Farnier

The Farnier family is one of the two major families in Fartown. They were originally a noble tiefling family in the capital but after a generation of bad family management they lost most of their money and influence. The previous head of the family, Gerard Farnier was a gambling addict, and he lost much of the family fortune due to this. Gerard met an early demise, dying of alcohol poisoning at the age of 56. There are no shortage of rumours about his death, with many nobles believing that Gertrud (The current head of the family and Gerards's eldest daughter) poisoned him.   Although his life and the circumstances of his death are incredbly sketchy, Gerard did one good thing for the Farnier family. He was the one that gambled on the electrum deposits in Fartown, and it was one of the few gambles he made that won. Although he died soon after the discovery of the electrum deposits in the western reach, he did end up receiving the credit for 'his shrewd business venture'.   Gertrud took over the family a year after the the electrum deposits were discovered. By this point Gerard had gambled away most of the initial profits and maintaining a life in the capital was becoming difficult. Gertrud decided to lead her family up the lonely road to the infant settlement of Fartown. Between the lower cost of living, and the distance from the capital and its gossip she considered it the best choice for the family.   Fartown was not all that was expected however. The Glendis family had already established themselves in the town and held a large sway, and there was hardly the luxury of the capital. Nonetheless the Farnier family, with Gertrud at the head, quickly established themselves in the town. They continued to feud with the Glendis family over the years despite Gertrud's best intentions. But the feud has seemingly been put on hold recently due to the prevalence of the adventurer's guild which has been taking political influence away from the noble families in Fartown.
