Young Life

Vanadren Baelhal was born following the first Phabean war between the Elven State of Phabe and the Human/Half-Elf Dusael empire. His parents were members of the Phabean Military and renown for their heroic defense of Elda in the early years of the war. Not wanting their son to suffer the same horrors they did, both Elincia and Virion encouraged their son's aptitude for magical research and trasmutation.
With a penchant for potions and a budding skill for transmutation, Vanadren was destined to work with the apothecaries of Elda and assist them with their research. At twenty, he started as an apprentice to Dahldrel, a tempermental, but respected apothecary of the Apothecary Alliance of Phabe. Dahldrel's shop was located in Caansari, a smaller town a few days east of Elda. For the next three decades, Vanadren would tend to the shop during daytime hours and watch his master's work in the evening.
Dahldrel was impressed early on with Vanadren's work and would regularly allow the young man to take over for him when he had to travel, allowing Vanadren to experience both sides of running the apothecary shop. It was when Vanadren was fifty-five that he was left with the shop, but this time, Dahldrel would not return.
The master apothecary was expected to be gone a month to delivery potions to the Merchant's Confederacy to the south, but two months had passed before Vanadren received word that his master's caravan was attacked during the journey, and Dahldrel was among the several killed.

Phabean Apothecary

While he mourned his master, Vanadren knew the best way to honor him would be to continue on his apothecary. Vanadren took over the shop, but never changed the name from Dahldrel's Potions and Reagents. With more freedom at his disposal, Vanadren would stay up late into the night experimenting with different combinations of potions and attempted transmutations. Word of Vanadren's skill eventually reached the Apothecary Alliance who invited him to help their research efforts in the capital.
Despite the hesitation of closing Dahldrel's shop, he knew the work he could do with the Alliance would benefit the world in a way that would make his late master proud. At the dawn of his second century, Vanadren would head back to his birthplace -- the Magic City of Elda.
Back home, Vanadren took up residence in the Apothecary Tower; his business sense was conducive to helping the organization direct supplies from the largest producer of potions in Tilorum. While he was not yet given access to the research facilities, he would frequently be brought in as an advisor when the rest of the apothecaries hid a standstill.
After helping with several breakthroughs, Vanadren was officially given the rank of Artisan Apothecary by the Alliance. He was invited to join several different research teams, but ultimately decided to support the Humanoid Enrichment Research Team -- a group of skilled apothecaries and wizards who worked to understand what made up living things and how the knowledge of potions and magic could help improve lives.

The Failed Experiment

During the War of the Red Dragon, the existence of Magicborne -- Humans imbued with magical energies -- came to light within certain groups across Phabe, specifically the Humanoid Enrichment Research Team, who managed to get ahold of several corpses obtained from the now-defunct Dusael Research Facility. Many wanted to know how the presence of magic flowing through one's bloodstream could change how that individual interacts with the world and what benefits or detriments it could have in one's life.
HERT spent several weeks researching the few corpses obtained from the facility, but made little to no headway. All they could surmise is that instead of blood running through the veins, it was a liquid arcane energy. With the corpses quickly becoming less and less usable, it was obvious that the Alliance would not learn what was truly possible.
Taking things into his own hands, Vanadren took samples of this liquid arcane energy and attempted to use that as a basis for a transmutation of his own blood. The transmutation utterly failed and it poisoned Vanadren's blood, causing numerous changes in the High Elf's body.
Upon learning of this, the Alliance rebuked Vanadren for his recklessness and ethical disregard. His position in the Alliance was revoked and was told to never return to the Apothecary Tower.
With no home left in Elda and the changes in his body occuring at a rapid rate, Vanadren made toward Agrammon in search of a new home.
