Waldo Herden
His Honor, Lord Sheriff Waldo Herden (a.k.a. Fearnaught)
Waldo Herden is the Sheriff of the Shire of Chaseton in the Ward of Selimar. He is a 49-year-old Halfling and is famous throughout the Kingdom of Cobal for successfully hunting and killing the man-eating Chase Lions.
Waldo grew up near the southern fringes of the Selimar Chase and spent years adventuring and hunting within it. He made a name for himself as a hunter of dangerous fauna and after serving for six years with the Rangers of Selimar, took it upon himself to rid the Shire of the threat posed by a pair of deadly Smilodon cats that had taken to running down farmers and wagoners that ventured too close to the forest. After numerous attempts were made by larger parties of adventurers and hunters that all failed to kill the cats (and cost most of the members of those parties their lives), Waldo took to the forest alone, armed only with is short sword, a stout spear and his horn bow. Over the course of a month, Waldo tracked the beasts on foot through the heart of the Chase and finally cornered them in a narrow gully. He wounded one with his bow, and fought the other with his spear. After a hard-fought battle, he killed one and tracked the wounded cat another two miles to its lair. There, he entered the cat's cave and confronted it with his sword. Even wounded, the smilodon was a fearsome foe, and Waldo bears the scars of the cat's claws across his chest and shoulders to this day. In the end, however, the cat was killed and Waldo returned to Chaseton with the cat's hides and skulls to prove they were dead.
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
Stoutly built and very strong. Hard-edged for a Halfling, with rugged and weathered features from years in the outdoors.
Identifying Characteristics
His chest and shoulders are deeply scarred by the claws of a large and ferocious Smilodon encounter many years earlier.
Special abilities
An exceptional tracker of both men and animals. Able to read more from a simple footprint in the mud than most can gleen from looking at the creature that made it.
Apparel & Accessories
Waldo wears the tips of the Smilodon's tails that he hunted and killed within the Chase on a thong around his neck. He insists they keep him safe from harm and is never seen to be without them.
Specialized Equipment
Waldo carries a worn and well-used short sword everywhere he goes, presumably the same sword with which he dispatched one of the Chase Lions with.
