Maxal am Maxalli

Lord Baron Maxal am Maxalli

Maxal am Maxalli was the last Baron of Southridge leading up to the Mykalli Civil War (often referred to as the Southridge Rebellion for the Maxalli leadership that led the fight), and he was the father of the first Maxalli King of Imesse, Josso am Maxalli.

Maxal is probably best remembered as the most prominent leader of the rebellion against King Thane am Mykalli up to Maxal's death while on campaign in 94 AF. After losing his son, Maxin, in the failed invasion of the Kingdom of Cobal early in 93 AF, Maxal became very vocal in his criticism of the King and his policies. With revolt and rebellion breaking out all across the Kingdom, it was really only a matter of time before Maxal joined the rebels and took up arms against Thane.

Maxal was 62 years old when the decision to openly rebel was made, and his health had suffered much during the years of famine and hardship that had led up to the decision. Add to that the death of his oldest son in an ill-planned invasion of a foreign country by an army already weakened and devastated by hunger and disease, and Maxal was suffering both physically and mentally when he began his campaign against Northridge.

The news that the Barony of Southridge was joining the fight against Thane was fuel for an already raging fire, however, and men and arms flocked to the Southridge camp. By the time Maxal had begun to move his army towards the Caldar River and the north, it had more than doubled in size to 16,000 men strong.

After his death and the victory of his son, Josso, over Thane, the Royal Court moved to Southridge and remained there for the next 109 years. No new Baron was named after Josso was crowned King of Imesse, and Maxal is often recalled as the last Baron of Southridge, even though his son was named baron immediately upon the death of Maxal.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

In his last months of life, Maxal was obsessed with the thought of finding justice for his dead son and a starving nation. He blamed all the Kingdom's troubles on the actions and inactions of King Thane, and once his mind was made up to join in the growing rebellion against Northridge, he committed is House and his Barony to the effort completely.

Representation & Legacy

While still remembered by historiographers and military analysts as a strong military leader and a much-loved Baron, Maxal's role in the overthrow of the Mykalli Dynasty is largely overshadowed by his second son, Josso "Thunderfist". His tomb and effigy are still well-known landmarks in the City of Southridge (located in the King's Square outside the castle's main gate), but little else is remembered about the last Baron of Southridge.

Social

Family Ties

Maxal was married twice, first to Gylda Staton of Southridge with whom he had three children. Maxin was the oldest of these children. Jossline died of a massive tumor on her spine in 65 AF. In 70 AF, Maxal married Jossline Rikmarri, a wealthy noblewoman from Soton, and they had four children together, the only son being Josso. Thus, there were fifteen years of age between Maxin and Josso.
