Burna Sovereignty

The Burna Sovereignty is one of the slaver states on the southern Arak Coast.  It has a population of 90,000 souls, mostly Human, and the vast majority of the population are controlled by a minority of just 18,000 Oshahni pirates and slavers.

Structure

Local natives are ruled and dominated by a controlling minority population of Oshahni pirates that are led by

Demography and Population

The Sovereignty counts more than 90,000 souls as subjects, but less than 18,000 of those subjects have any rights or dignities at all.  Kaashi and Karni serfs and slaves outnumber Oshahni by more than 4-to-1, but the brutal Oshahni elites crush any dissent or resistance immediately.   The Kaashi natives live primarily in the far south and west of the Burna territory, as close to the Kaash River as they can get.  The Karni live closer to the Karn River Valley and the coastal regions of the east.   Oshahni ethinicity is widely varied, but a significant portion of the ruling class is of Arian descent, including the Sovereign, Etienne la Roue and most of his official court.

Territories

Burna claims the Arak Coast from the mouth of the Kaash River in the south to the area just south of the mouth of the Karn River in the east, and as far inland from the coast as 60 miles.  There are a number of mostly uninhabited islands off the Burna coast, mainly used as fishing camps for locals.   The Sovereignty of Burna claims about 6,100 square miles as its territory, but the vast majority of this land is uninhabited. The bulk of all habitation is within seven miles of the coast and within four miles of the major navigable rivers of that territory.   The bulk of claimed territory is dense hardwood forest and coastal jungle, with the driest areas found at the heighest elevations.  The land is far lower and flatter than the surrounding areas, and as a result rivers are navigable for a greater distance inland than it the surrounding coastal areas.  The heighest elevations are on the eastern coast near the border of Karnesh and in the frontier region between the Kaash and Karn watersheds.

Military

The ruling Oshahni elite are the only members of the society that can bear arms, and nearly all of them do so.  Over the last decade, the Sovereign has spent huge sums of money and effort to build defensive structures around the political centers of the country.  Massive walls, port defenses, castles and infrastructure have been planned and completed and more construction is ongoing.   In the event of an attack, the Oshahni elite could be expected to muster a force of some 9,000-10,000 armed and armored men.  If given enough time, they could expect to see 2,500 of those men mounted.  At any given time, with no warning, a city like Burna could muster a militia force of some 500 armed and armored men.

Agriculture & Industry

Very nearly all agriculture is doen by native labor.  Goat farms, a few cattle, pigs and poultry constitute the bulk of the animal husbandry industry, while millets like barley and buckwheat are the primary cereals.  Mead and ale are the alcohols of necessity, if not choice.  Some wine and beer is available at a high price, and only to Oshahni customers.   In the larger towns and cities, one still booming industry for the local labor is stone hauling.  The construction efforts of the Oshahni rulers is still ongoing, and the demand for cut stone to be hauled, stacked and dressed is seemingly never ending.  This is an easy and obvious means of procuring a meal for a set of strong arms and a day's effort, at least for the Kaashi and Karni men.

Trade & Transport

The engine driving trade in the Sovereignty is piracy and slaves.  At least 40 fast and well-armed ships call Burna their home port, and all of them are constantly prowling the waters for merchant prey.  When cargo does not present itself, raids to the towns and villages further north and south can often provide a hold full of women and children for the slave pens.

Infrastructure

Burna has seen a large degree of improvement in the area of infrastructure over the last decade.  Port facilities have been improved, walls and gatehouses have been constructed, castles and fortresses have been designed and built.
