GCME
General Certificate of Magical Education
The GCMEs are typically sat at the same time as GCSEs at the age of fifteen to sixteen.
Usually, the grades achived at GCME and GCSE are used to determine admission to collages and sixth-forms. Although this is less of a concern to students at Thornfield School as they are practically guaranteed a position in the school's sixth form, their results in these exams are still important in determining which subjects students are allowed to continue to study at A-level for the next two years.
The curiculum for these qualifications is typically made up of a group of core subjects that everyone studies, though these vary slightly by school, and then the students are able to select a number of optional subjects, this again depends on the school.
The subjects are tested in a number of ways, usually combining a writen exam and a practical exam but this depends on the subject that is being tested. The exams are usually sat around the same time as the GCSE exams and the timetable is set by the Department for Magical Education who also set the curiculum.
A good passing grade on the GCMEs can allow students to quickly advance to higher exams including the exams set by different covens to join the internatational councils of magical strands.
