Nullification Generator

A type of generator used by the Xalarin Council to generate power by annihilating matter without use of antimatter.

Nullification generators can generate a huge amount of energy from cheap materials, including waste matter by using Superposition Influencers to cause matter to decay. However, it requires a large amount energy to start up unlike most other types of powerful reactors. Strangely, Nullification Reactors also require fissile material such as uranium and thorium to remain running. This is reacted within a nuclear reactor attached to the Nullification Generator to provide the machine with a source of very high energy neutrons. The neutron energy levels are increased massively when most of the heat released by the nuclear reaction is transferred to the neutrons. The high energy neutrons are used to provide a medium through which to split matter fuel into constituent  particles, making it far easier to manipulate their wavefunctions due to the smaller size. The high energy neutrons can also be used to power some specific components of the Superposition Influencer.

For a spacefaring civilization such as the Xalarin Council, nuclear reactors have been made extremely safe and reliable. They also have the added advantage of being very cheap and easy to maintain. As such, this relatively simple technology can afford complex modifications. They absorb most radiation that they emit and release it into the neutron streams by converting this generated energy into photon radiation. Advanced machines can fire massive numbers of photon clusters at incoming neutrons by utilising superposition influencers. This appears to violate the uncertainty principle as both the position and velocity of the particles would need to be known, but the device is intentionally built so that it cannot be observed from outside the system. Therefore, all particles become waves. Using the wave model, the 'true' purpose of the superposition influencers are actually to influence the probabilities that photon clusters will collide with neutrons. This 'neutron gun' technology has also been weaponised as very - high energy neutrons are very penetrative and cause heavy damage to organic matter.

Nullification Generators also produce a lot of heat, a byproduct of the nuclear fission reactions that it utilises. It must also release nuclear waste which is often fed back into the Nullification Generator as matter fuel to produce power and eliminate a hazard.

If a Nullification Generator becomes damaged, it may continue to emit ultra - high energy neutrons, a potential threat to the ship and/or organic life. They have been carefully designed to trip a circuit breaker when the integrity of the generator is compromised, but this is likely to cut almost all power to a starship so a strict protocol is in place to repair them when they are damaged.
