Session 7: Let's Get Spooky Report

General Summary

The graveyard temple sits at the center. The graveyard consists of underground tombs that hold urns of ashes, individual burial plots, and a mass grave for those who couldn’t afford better. The ground level of the temple contains a chapel with benches and a raised dais, which holds an altar and a viewing table for bodies of the deceased. The other chambers of the temple’s first floor contain the priests’ quarters, offices, embalming chambers, as well as a vault, which holds the temple's holy items, supplies, and components for their most frequently performed rituals such as holy oil and water.   The temple’s cellar holds burial and financial records, as well as tools used in the caretaking of the graveyard. Tunnels that can be sealed with iron doors connect the cellar to all of the graveyard’s tombs. As they progress through the tunnels there appears to be a recently dug section that branches off and proceeds down a few more feet. At the end of this newly carved section is a small prep space off to the left and a large ritual chamber at the far end.   In order to reach the new chambers, the PCs must battle their way past a few swarms of rats and three shadows.   Traveling Under the Graveyard Encounter   As the PCs come to the newly added sections they can find ritual supplies in the prep space, including severed limbs, crow and vulture bones, a few gold coins with holes punched through the middle, and the corpses of several rats, insects, and some unidentifiable small creatures. As Tyrael enters the chamber, he feels the sting of a whip flash across his arm, and then it's gone.   When they reach the main chamber, the basis of the attacks, and why there has been an increase in undead, is made clear. Inside, deep in spell-trance, are dark priests of Erebos performing a ritual to thin the veil between the Underworld and the mortal realm. A hard to see, smokey portal shimmers in the air in the center of the circle of priests. Necromancy magic comes off it in waves. As the PCs approach, they'll have a single round to prepare or do something quickly before the cultists notice them. However, if they wait too long, the portal will shunt forth a two-headed Cerberus. As the battle begins, they will face a cult fanatic and the two-headed Cerberus, if not already in play, will jump out of the portal.
