The Spire

The Spire, Providence's crowning jewel and the tallest land-based building on the continent, towers nearly 3000 feet (914.5 meters) over the capital city. Originally built as the training center for warriors of the Providence Gladiatorial Network, the Spire has since become the destination for gladiatorial combatants and spectators around the world. It hosts the Theran Gladiatorial Championship every three years, as well as a number of continental contests and events year-round.   The original building, constructed near the end of the First Age, comprises the lowest third of the modern-day structure and still retains most of its original stonework, though it has been magically enhanced to allow additions. This lowest portion is commonly referred to as the Arena, though it contains nearly twenty rings of various types. The primary arena, which comes to mind when most folk picture the Spire, is a soaring, open chamber that spans two-thirds the width of the building and holds a modest 100,000 spectators. Competitor gates open on the ground floor, while spectator seats and viewing windows occupy floors 2 - 49, with food and refreshment stands sprinkled throughout the outer band of the building.    The central third houses the training facility and competitor quarters. Floors 51 - 65 (floor 50 is a security buffer and maintenance floor) contain three different combat training arenas, each with a height of five floors. Floors 66 - 75 contain multiple smaller arenas: generally four to a floor, each with a two-floor height. Floors 76 - 99 serve as competitor quarters. These levels feature: a variety of apartments that can house a total of 1000 visitors; three kitchens operating at all hours; two rest and recovery floors with round the clock staffing; a library; an armory; and four full-time healers.   The last "third" is, in fact, unequal in height, but is by far the most coveted. This is the section of private residences and terraces that overlook miles upon miles of the spectacular landscape. Similarly to the lower buffer, floor 100 functions solely as a security level, while every tenth floor above (110, 120, 130) is reserved for tower maintenance. Residency floors 101 - 119 are divided into four apartments; 121 - 129 into two; and 131 - 139 are single residences only. Floor 140 is an open terrace protected by a weather dome enchantment so that residents may enjoy the top of the tower even, or especially, during the wildest storms.
